Guess You Have To Like Em

Mother-in-laws can be mother-in-laws.

They can be the ones you hide from at family get togethers, the ones you don't answer the phone when you see their number pop up, the ones you have nightmares about, the ones that haunt you for the rest of you life.

But, they can also be the ones who are caring, who do what they can for you, and are just happy you are the one married to their child.

My mother-in-law is a combination of both. Sometimes she drives me crazy and then other moments, she comes through with a surprise or two.

So for every moment she comes over to my house and makes those absurd comments about my toaster oven being full of crumbs or how I should be parenting, she also has those moments where I find a coffee, a snack or even some sports cards.

Though most of the time she doesn't always bring the greatest stuff, she at least tries and I have to credit her for that.

On the other hand, sometimes....she finds some diamonds in the rough.

That's where today's post comes into play.

Her latest finds came at an auction and this time it isn't so much about the sports cards for me. It's about another sweet luxury item.

The cards were shoved into a green grocery bag all loose. Most of what was in there was 1974 baseball and a few peeks of hockey. As someone who wasn't born until 1983 and didn't get into sport cards until 1994 and into sports until 1995, there wasn't a lot that really had my interest in the group. I didn't know most if not any of the players.

I am sure most baseball bloggers reading this right now have their jaws dropped in disbelief.

There were some Nolan Ryan cards though. I do know who he is.

The pages were kind of sticky both by a substance and the fact they were the older pages.

Most of these cards I expect will end up in my base boxes to my father.

But, not these two, they were keepers.

I have zero idea what either of these non-sport cards are from, but they looked cool so I kept them.

Just for a heads up, she told me she bid $27 on these and won them. There was another guy who was going back and forth with her over them.

Let me know in comments if you think she overpaid for those. I believe she paid at least three times over what they would be worth.

Now onto the key prize and apple, big apple, of my eye from this purchase.
Yes you are reading it right.

A Lawrence Taylor autograph football on a stand. The football is a little deflated and cannot be blown back up, I tried after but the Patriots must have gotten to it first (yes this is a joke I will beat into the ground).

It's still a magnificent piece and really sharp signature.

She told me this one went for $60. Let me know if she overpaid for this item.

I was pretty happy with the addition of the LT autographed football. There were about four non-sport cards and some Nolan Ryans I plan on keeping from the bag of cards.

Overall, she did pretty good this time in her search and finds. I guess I can let her keep coming over for this.

Whether you like them or not, Mother-In-Laws aren't going anywhere so guess you have to like em.

Hopefully yours is a well balanced edition like mine.

Have a great rest of your night.

  1. Some really nice finds there. My Mother-in-Law passed on a few years ago. She is missed by many. I have less than 30 minutes left of my Saturday. Have a great Sunday!

  2. You're lucky to have such a thoughtful mother-in-law. That football is really cool. I wonder if there are people who can fix footballs. I have a pair of team signed footballs (1977 East-West Shrine Game and mid 90's 49ers) that can't be inflated. I'd love to get them fixed an authenticated one day.

  3. The one nonsports card you kept is a sticker from the Welcome Back Kotter TV show, which was a huge hit sitcom in the mid-1970s. ... I think the 1970s cards there (I see some '76 Topps baseball and '74 Topps football), along with the Ryans, are worth the price, provided the cards are in all right shape.

  4. Not sure if your MIL is into collecting cards or not, but she thought of you and bid for those items for you. You have a good MIL.
