The question is why?
Why would someone overpay for this card?
Why would someone pay $26 for this card?
When they could have just scrolled down and bought one for under $4 like I did.
I mean the only difference was the way the card was listed and the fact it was put into a magnetic case. Mine came in a toploader. I don't feel like paying the extra $22 for a nicely set up picture and a $4 magnetic case is worth it. I don't know about you.
I am happy to have added this Griffey to my PC and especially for the price if I am comparing here. Maybe I got a deal but looking at the average rate for this card I got it for what it should have been for.
What do you guys think about when a card like this sells for more? Is this done by mistake? Is it the misleading title catching unsuspecting buyers off guard if they are new to collecting? Or was it literally because of the picture and magnetic case? And have you ever paid more for a card by mistake?
Leave your thoughts in comments.
I hope everyone has a great Thursday!

I've wondered about this with random cards over the years. Part of me thinks it's fake auctions or BIN listings to raise the completed sales prices. I guess it could also be a trigger happy buyer, but the listing you showed was an auction. That means at least two people competed for this card. That's why I find it a little suspicious.
ReplyDeleteI bet there is some scammy part behind some of these sales for sure
DeleteI go onto ebay with the mind-set that someone is trying to take me so I'm extra wary of inflated prices. ... On the other side, I don't mind paying extra for something I really really want, but I do research to make sure there's nothing cheaper first.
ReplyDeleteExactly. Pay the little extra for the ones you really want, but find deals otherwise. All you have to do is spend time, research. Even mess with the spelling can help
Deleteyeah what they said :)
ReplyDeletehaha!
DeleteI don't sell very much, but I usually list everything as a BIN. Most of my items are set the lowest allowed at $0.99. There are a lot of sellers that overprice things. As a buyer you definitely have to watch carefully. Enjoy the hobby all with more coffee please.
ReplyDeleteProbably easier to sell that way. I hate the sellers who do best offer than turn down every offer
DeleteYeah, I think it's mostly just impulse buying and laziness. I'm very price-conscious and I'm usually good about checking to see if something's available at a better price, but I'm not sure I'm perfect about it. I'm not surprised if some people don't even check.
ReplyDeleteyeah with limited funds you really have to do research and take time to be able to stay in the hobby in now times
DeleteThe higher price seller invokes a bit of marketing to help his case, calling the card an "SP" in the title (despite the gold and base cards having the exact same print run of just under 30k cards). Condition is certainly at play. The one in the scuffed up top loader has some debris which may scratch the card, and either has some loose hairs or very faint creases present. That said, the pictures show neither card are going to get 9 or 10 grades at PSA, so no need to attach a giant premium.
ReplyDeleteExactly. Sometimes its all about the set up. I didn't mind paying the lesser price for a bad toploader
