Home Field Advantage

Hot coffee, warm morning, laptop open and a new card to show off. It's time for some Cards Over Coffee!

But, before I kick off today's post, I have a couple updates on my shoulder.

First Update, on Wednesday I went to see Ortho, they examined me and decided to take my arm out of the sling because they don't want me to end up with a frozen shoulder and have the rest of my arm stiff either.

However, there was no clear answers on what to do going forward yet. There is still the fracture, but they are also trying to figure out if I tore anything. The consensus was there's a good possibility that I tore my rotator cuff, but need an MRI to tell if I did that or any other damage before they move on with a treatment plan. Hopefully I didn't tear it as that would stink as I didn't even pitch an inning in the big leagues yet and the fact it would take a long time for rehab.

Second Update, I called MRI yesterday and they are fully booked. I cannot get in until February 6th. So, even more waiting for answers to come when all I want is simply to have my arm back. You don't know how good life is when you have both of your arms. Especially your dominant one.

Speaking of update, my buddy Shane pulled a really cool card that I wanted from this year's Topps Update. It's an insert I have wanted for a few years now.

And guess what....now I own one.

Home Field Advantage. I think these are some of the coolest looking inserts out there and the bonus here is that it's a NY Yankee with future stud Anthony Volpe. I love the art appeal to these and how it showcases the player and the city they play for and how it's represented.

Don't tell me you don't agree.

I also like the fact that these cards are not easy pulls. I believe they are one-per-case hit so it brings me back to the good ole days of the 90's when inserts looked great and weren't easy to pull. Nostalgia hits with this one.

The ultimate goal in my collecting is to land a Ken Griffey Jr one. It's my main baseball PC and it features a coffee cup on the front. How does that not sound like a perfect fit into my collection?

Thanks again Shane for the trade.

Speaking of Home Field Advantage, I have a feeling this weekend's NFL Championship games will belong to both home teams. There is just something about playing at home and it feels since the season started that this is what its been coming to.

I hope everyone has a great Friday. Take care and I highly recommend not falling on any ice.

Coffee Break:2022 Topps Update Baseball

*new post, new cards, new break. let's do this.*

*takes a sip, bite of asiago bagel with jalapeΓ±o cheese made ahead of time and gets ready for a new cards over coffee*

Welcome back readers! Who is ready for a new Cards Over Coffee post? I see you tipping the mug towards the computer!

Today, I will be breaking a box of 2022 Topps Update baseball so with no further delay, let's get to this.

*takes another sip, another bite and gets ready for today's post*

Every hobby box of 2022 Topps Update comes with 24 packs of 14 cards. There is one autograph or relic per box and boxes currently are $110.

*takes a sip, begins to rip*

Every box also comes with a silver pack box topper.
There are 4 cards in every pack of Topps Chrome Update silver packs.

Nothing too special here. Once again, the 1987 design is getting an appearance. I am really tired of seeing it. Would be more fun if they did a different Topps design every year on these throwbacks. Let's see 1988 Topps next year!!

BASE:

The base card set is 330 cards deep. It has players in updated uniforms (by the way, didn't know Cano was still playing)

The rookies which is the most important part of the product to me.

And plenty of subset fun.

SHORT PRINTS
Here was my box variation.

PARALLELS:
Topps Update has the following parallels,
Gold Foil, Royal Blue, Rainbow Foil, Gold /2022, Green Foil /499, Advanced Stats /300, Orange Foil /299, Red Foil /199, Vintage Stock /99, Independence Day /76, Black /70, Mother’s Day Hot Pink /50, Father’s Day Powder Blue /50, Memorial Day Camo /25, Platinum 1/1, and Printing Plates 1/1
Rainbow Foil

Gold /2022

Green Foil /499

INSERTS:
Some inserts have the following parallels,
Blue, Black /299, Gold /75, Red /10, and Platinum 1/1.
MLB All-Star Game, which is usually a subset, but now turned insert. Not that exciting. There are 50 of these to chase as well.

Speaking of 50 card insert sets, there is that darn 1987 Topps again!!

However, I really dig the 25-card set of Topps Black Gold. These take me back and maybe for once a newer card looks better than the original. Let me know if you agree in comments.

Diamond-Greats Die Cut set. There are 25 cards to collect as well. Got my boy Griffey so I was happy!

30 cards makes up Generation Now insert set. Love the shine!

25 cards make up the Paragons Of The Postseason set. I pulled one of my least favorite players.

HITS:
I was getting nervous. It came down to the last pack and it wasn't thick. I can't remember the last time I pulled an autograph in Update or any flagship Topps but here we are. It's not really anyone I know, but it's still an autograph.

OVERALL THOUGHTS:
I got exactly what I wanted from Update, the rookies. That's pretty much my only chase from this product. But, I will say that a few of the inserts really caught my attention, no I am not looking at you 1987 anything.

Let me know your thoughts in comments on this product.

How I Got A 2011 Topps Update Mike Trout

*sits down, takes a sip hoping that the coffee will help with the head cold feeling. gets computer ready for a new post of Cards Over Coffee*

This summer, I landed the biggest card on my want list in the most unorthodox way. I always predicted myself to trade for one if I was ever lucky enough to do so.

I never expected one to fall into my lap.

*takes a sip*

This summer I had a text from a local friend that included this stack of cards.

And he asked if I was interested since he doesn't collect or know anything about sports.

Okay...I see the 2011 Topps Update wrapper right on top....of course I am!

He told me they were mine if I wanted to go pick them up.

I would have jumped in the car immediately; except he was at work, so I waited until the next day.

When I got to his house, we talked a bit about fun memories, since it had been a while since we had seen each other, and he handed me a Walmart bag with the cards in it. He explained to me how he had bought a dumpy mobile home to fix up and flip and how these were sitting in a pile of junk in the mobile home. From the pictures he showed of the place, there must have been one of those people from the show Hoarders living in there.

It was gross. We are talking animal feces, cat peeing on the walls, trash, food, clothing, you name it. It was there. I told him he should have made a before and after video of it.

Not a place I would drink coffee in and do a new post for Cards Over Coffee that's for sure.

So, we talked for a bit more and said our goodbyes and I went home with a Walmart bag full of cards.

*takes a sip before showing off the cards*

I got home and dug right in. I do the same thing with mail days and retail rips.

We will start with that wrapper on top, when I pulled it out of the bag, I thought it was actually a sealed pack, but it wasn't. But, it appears the person used it to protect some of the cards and stuck some parallels in the opened wrapper.

Here is what I found in there. Nothing too special, but I do like those diamond parallels. Still one of the best Topps parallels all -time.

Along with these, there was a big stack of base and tons of parallels. I won't bother with the base show off since you guys aren't here for that, but here is what else I found,

v

Being in a Walmart bag for storage without protection hurt some of the cards. There were some bent corners on the base stack and a couple of the parallels.

Fortunately, the key cards from the stack appeared safe from that.
Anthony Rizzo Update Rookie

J.D. Martinez Update rookie card.

Babe Ruth Sp. Wrong team, so I mailed this to my friend Shane for Christmas.

And the real reason you are here.....
Mike Trout Update Rookie Card.

I was hopeful throughout the stack but wasn't expecting the Trout to still be in there. This was close to the bottom of the pile and as everyone on Twitter states when they find a big pull, "my hands were shaking".

And there you have it, that's how I got a 2011 Topps Update Mike Trout.

*takes a sip before finishing up the post*

I have never experienced this kind of luck in my life before. I see it all of the time but have never actually had it happen to me.

And yes, I told my buddy about it who had no idea who Mike Trout is. I assumed even the casual person does.

Thoughts on this collection, if you own a Trout Update rookie and any other thoughts welcomed in comments below.

Have a great Tuesday.
