Card About Coffee

*where would life be without coffee is what I am pondering this morning after not getting a lot of sleep last night. For a strictly decaf coffee drinker, the taste is what its all about for me so I go to a lot of dark roasts to get that flavor. otherwise it feels like I am drinking watered down milk or what I call skim milk. takes another sip, I can feel myself waking up some...*

I had never considered the thought before, but how cool would it be to own a card that involved coffee for this Coffee drinking, blogger? So I took to Twitter for help on this subject. I was shown a few examples of players drinking out of paper cups, etc. It really wasn't what I was looking for. Then I started getting some more interesting suggestions. Someone found a really cool Coffee Mug card from 1991 Star Pics Twin Peaks I really want still. Another person found suggested that maybe I should collect a few Glen Coffee cards. Then a close friend of mine sent me a picture of a card that is in today's card post and let me tell you, this card is a perfect fit.

*takes another sip. not feeling quite hungry yet, but craves more coffee. follows up with a few more sips, a gulp and a swig to finish the cup. onto cup #2*

In 2019, Rittenhouse created a Scratch and Sniff set in it's Twin Peaks Archives product. There are a few cards in that set that would fit on this blog but none more than the one I bought.

Coffee...and yes, I scratched it some just so I can sniff it and they nailed the scent.

 

I probably won't scratch it too many times as I don't want it to lose its essence.

I don't remember a lot about the show but remember watching it in the 90's. I may have to do some research or watch a few episodes to remind myself.

On my big want list right now is to hunt down that Star Pics Coffee Mug card. I think it would be a lot of fun to coffee card up this blog.

Also on my watch list is adding a few more of these that would fit on here such as Bacon and Eggs, Birthday Cake and especially, Donuts. No, I am not a cop.

Etymology Of Junior

*takes a seat after finishing up some chores, decides this cold cloudy/rainy morning is a perfect time for another #CardsOverCoffee post*

I consider myself a Ken Griffey Jr closet collector. It used to be more known that I was one of the "Griffey Guys" but as I continue to add more football cards to my collection and downsize my baseball, my Griffey collecting has taken a backseat as well.

But, that doesn't mean I have completely given up on collecting Griffey as he still remains the biggest player PC I have with over 1,000 different cards, but it's just not a main focus. I do add some with my trades with Shane (Cheap Wax Wednesday) and occasionally will add some if I see any I need up for trade on Twitter.

Then there are the rare times where I will actually buy one now. That is what today's card is all about.

*takes a sip, looks over at the latest Griffey addition next to the coffee mug*

For some reason or another, I have been all over getting cards with athletes and some form of superheroes on them. There will be another post coming up with more of those types of additions. So today's Griffey had a hero of some form on it so I had to have it.

In 1996, Stadium Club produced an insert set called Mega Heroes that fell 1:18 packs. 

The 10 card set featured a superstar player along with a mega hero. The cards have a rainbow foil front that really glow in the light. Especially a lightbox, see what I did there.

 

The back of the cards had a small write up and gives the history of the players featured had their nicknames. For Griffey, most call him Junior and that's because when he and his father played together for the first time in a game, it got confusing since they both carry the same name so they had to find a way to separate the names. So they began calling them Senior and Junior. Pretty simple.

This card sells for $5 and up, but being stingy like I have to be, I made an offer and landed it for $3 with free shipping. I got a deal and was happy to add a nice card.

My Griffey collection will continue to grow as time goes on. I am no hurry to chase them all down, however I would really love the 1998 Skybox Dugout Axcess Superheroes card. Griffey is featured with Spiderman. So if you have one available for trade, hit me up.

Trying It Out

*hears a noise, gets up from computer and sees that the cat had knocked stuff off a shelf. stops to think about picking it up now, but decides to come back down to laptop and coffee, because it's time for some Cards Over Coffee*

Today, kicks off the first post with my lightbox photos. I know these photos won't be perfect as I continue to figure out how to use it, but I think they are drastically improved from what they were. Glad I am trying it out.

*hears another noise, cat must be getting into something else or tearing apart the stuff they already knocked over. gets up, takes care of the mess, then comes back to sit to continue on with the latest #CardsOverCoffee post*

Another thing I was glad I tried out was trading with blog reader Oren. He has been my most consistent trader of 2021 as I have shown off a multitude of trades on here from him.

This is my most recent one that included cards from most PC areas,

NY Giants. The lightbox really shows off the shine on the Slayton card.

Fleer Metal universe! I can never get enough of it!

90's inserts. I have never seen these up close before.

Side Player PC in Curtis Martin. I still desperately need the Ground Zero parallel of his 1995 Summit rookie card.

Sets. This is only the third or maybe fourth towards my set chase of these 1995 Topps Boosters. Such beautiful cards and now they can be captured better on here with the help of the Lightbox.

90's Relics. Today's relics have no comparison to these.

And finally, a Lamar Jackson Score rookie card. What a game he had on Monday night against the Colts! He is fun to watch!

Coffee With Frank Gifford

For the last three years, I have been trying to collect one autograph of every NY Giants player and coach. Whether that be someone who only made it through training camp, preseason, a few years or became a legend. I want at least one of them. They do however have to be in a Giants uniform preferably but I also accept college ones.

One of the bigger glaring names on my list was a Hall Of Famer known to play both offense and defense. That guy, Frank Gifford.

*takes another sip, gets ready to show the card off*

For someone who is a Hall Of Famer, made the Pro Bowl 8 times, went to 5 NFL Championships, was an MVP, stayed with one team his whole career and then played multiple positions on offense and defense, his cards and autographs are not to hard to acquire with a good portion being found under $30.

The best one I found was a Sportkings auto under that price. You cannot go wrong finding a player of this caliber under $30 who also has a great signature.

Gifford sadly passed away in 2015 at the age of 84. 

When it comes to his career, I never got to watch any games that he played in. I am too much of a youngin'. I do need to find some older footage on him to watch sometime. I did however see a good portion of his wife, Kathie Lee who was co-host of the talk show Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee

Trying Something New

*takes a sip of freshly brewed coffee. It hits the soul and is uplifting this morning. I am ready now for another day and ready for a new Cards Over Coffee*

I know the post title says trying something new, but that won't pertain to my morning cup of coffee. It pertains to being more open to trying things I normally wouldn't.....except switching out my morning coffee for another beverage.

For example, Betty Crocker brought back one of my favorite childhood snacks at school in Dunkaroos. I usually don't try things that get brought back as they are never like the original, but part of my trying new things led me to grab a box. I know I should have grabbed a pack, but just in case I actually liked them, I wanted a few extra.

What can go wrong with coffee, cookies and frosting?

 

The packaging was as I remembered it.

And so wasn't the contents.

So I gave it a go and I will be happy to report I no longer have to worry about having bought an entire box except the fact I didn't buy two. It was just as good as I remembered and I am hoping to give the chocolate frosting version a go once I find it.

First new thing, awesome. Glad to had taken the chance on it.

But, not all new things you try won't be.

That's when this bag of Candy Corn comes into the conversation.

I am a big fan of Candy Corn, don't worry I know some of you are gagging right now, so I grabbed my usual Harvest Corn and Regular bag, then I saw the above bag. I heard about this before, but had never saw one on the shelves around here. So...had to try something new....right?

Well, I regretted it.

I thought, how could you make candy corn taste disgusting (as you are thinking isn't it already disgusting), well, add flavors of green beans, turkey and stuffing and that's a recipe for not success. It actually made my stomach hurt.

However, the apple pie and these coffee flavored ones above were pretty darn good. If they made a bag of the coffee flavored ones I would be in heaven. Maybe even change the blog name to Cards Over Coffee Corn.

*takes another sip of real coffee, not the candy corn kind melted down*

I usually try not to copycat another bloggers pickups as I feel weird posting the same cards they just did, but sometimes they are just too interesting not to. So I have been trying something new by picking up some of the cards I have seen on other blogs especially Jon's A Penny Sleeve For Your Thoughts.

Him and I have some similar collecting interests so when I grabbed the lot of Ren and Stimpy, I also snagged another card I believe was in the same post.

When I saw this cool "rookie card" of  Robert Englund Jon had posted, I had to grab a copy for myself.

 

And what better person to show off in October than this guy who was known as Freddy Kruger. I have no idea about the show V or who he played on it but know about the guy who haunted teens in their nightmares. As I said before, I grew up watching horror movies with my mother so this card is nostalgic to me and those are the cards that mean the most.

There is nothing wrong with trying new things whether it's trying new foods or finding new ways to collect or even trying to collect things others collect. How would you know otherwise if its something you like if you don't take the chance? 

It took me a long time to try new things as I am a repetitious person, but, breaking out has led to some fun discoveries that I wished I had tried years ago.

Coffee With Ed Asner

*it's early but coffee is in order. When isn't it? Takes a sip, gets ready for another new #CardsOverCoffee. You know you want it!*

On August 29th, 2021 we lost a legend on the big screen in Ed Asner who passed away at the age of 91.

Even though most remember him as Lou Grant on the Mary Tyler Show and the spinoff Lou Grant, I remember him more in other films and television spots. Some of those are his voice acting of Roland Daggett in Batman The Animated Series, Christmas Vacation 2, Elf (he made a great Santa) and of course the award winning Up.

But, he was in so much more.

*takes a sip, remembering watching him on Elf as Santa and realizing we aren't too far from watching that again*

He had been an autograph need on my list for a few years and I waited a little too long since he had passed which drives up prices, but I paid because I still wanted it.

He has a nice signature,

Nostalgia is always a driving point for my non sport pickups, Ed falls under that category for some of his roles.

One thing I haven't mentioned yet about Ed Asner was that he came locally a few years ago and did a one man show my mother-in-law went to go see. She was also able to snap a few photos of him during his act, one of which she gave to me but I forgot to include in this post. I found that pretty cool as well. I pushed for her to grab an autograph as well but guess he didn't do any signing afterwards.

Local Guys

*a surprising warm streak in October the last few days with temps up in the 70's has me feeling better about winter not showing up out of nowhere. takes a sip, gets ready for a new #CardsOverCoffee*

I always see many tweets, Facebook posts and even a few blog posts that brag about local "celebrities". So I sat down to think, do any actually exist here? I know none are from my home or current town but in a short distance there are two that come to mind. Actor Luis Guzman who lives roughly 13 minutes from me and Basketball player Taylor Coppenrath who went to my rival high school 20 minutes away.

I thought it would be fun to add some cardboard of them like everyone seems to do with their local celebrities. Unlike others however, my search wasn't as easy.

*takes a sip*

Guzman has been acting for over 40 years and has been in many movies and television shows, but as far as I can see, doesn't have any cardboard which is surprising being someone who has been in Hollywood as long as he has. Maybe Leaf needs to be contacted about including him in Pop Century.

Taylor Coppenrath played basketball on my rival high schools team, went to college at UVM where he won multiple awards, went undrafted in the NBA but made it onto the Boston Celtics summer league for one season before taking a European contract to play basketball overseas. He currently moved back and is coaching high school basketball. Coppenrath does have a handful of trading cards out there from Press Pass, but not easily found. I did scrounge a few together though from a my last Burbank Sportcards order.

*takes a sip before eating a brownie bite that just happened to be sitting next to me, takes another sip another bite and now onto showing off the cards*

Coppenrath was included into 2005 Press Pass and has roughly 11 cards out there according to Trading Card Database.

I picked up the base card.

The gold holofoil which is numbered to 100

The Old School insert.

And one of the four autograph cards he has.

It's a small collection but I am happy with what I have. If I happen to stumble upon anymore I may add to it.

A couple-not-so-local celebrities that comes to mind for the state as well is Jim Cantore (the face of the Weather Channel who needs a Allen Ginter card) and wide receiver David Ball. Ball, broke Jerry Rice's Division 1-AA record for touchdown receptions when he played for UNH and later closed in on a couple others as well before being overtaken by Cooper Kupp for those. But, Ball still remains close to the top in most categories but never made an NFL roster other than preseason games for the Bears and Jets. That's still pretty cool though. Ball has cards in multiple Donruss/Playoff products and Sage and I look forward to actually adding at least one.

I may also have to tag Brian Gray from Leaf on Twitter and try to put a push for a Luis Guzman card for Pop Century. That would be a fun addition to my collection especially a signed one.
