Coffee With Griffin Dunne

If you are reading the Coffee With title part and scratching your head at the name Griffin Dunne, don't worry, you just haven't watched the right horror movie yet.

For those of us who have, we realize that Griffin Dunne played Jack Goodman in An American Werewolf in London. Some consider it a comedy-horror, I just look at it as a horror.

If you are unfamiliar with the film, it features two American graduate students guys backpacking in England, when the two wandered off the road they were told to stay on and were attacked by a beast, later on finding out it was a werewolf.  One of the students was brutally killed, Jack, while the other was just bitten some but now turns into a werewolf because of it. 

And even though Jack was killed, he still makes appearances in the film and talks to David and is the one who reveals to him what really happened to the both of them.

The film included some cool scenes including varying looks of Jack's return and what I consider one of the best human-to-werewolf transformations in horror movie history.

When I found Griffin on the checklist for Leaf Pop Century,

 

I grabbed the autograph because this was a movie I watched time and time again with my mother growing up. It was one of her favorite werewolf movies other than The Howling. 

I actually preferred this one over The Howling. 

This autograph actually serves as a two-way find as Griffin also played Uncle Nicky on the series This Is Us. A show that was superb and one that my wife and I binged.

But, for the focus of today's post on Halloween, I stuck to the Halloween movie. But, please if you haven't yet, watch This Is Us. So many plot twists and turns. I do suggest though not watching the final two episodes, I consider the final episode the third to last episode. That's the way it should have ended.

If you grew up when I did, you would have spent some time on ABC watching The Wonder Years. I didn't know many that didn't grow up at least watching the show or at least hummed the theme song.

The show and the song bring back a lot of nostalgic memories. When I found that Lauria, who played the stern and loving father Jack Arnold on The Wonder Years, had an autograph for cheap-I snagged it.

Fun parallel on top of that.

 

The card is numbered to 25.

As with any autograph card I add and chase, this was a nice addition to the nostalgic PC.

Now if only I could add a Savage and especially a McKellar someday.

Coffee With Charles Martinet

It's another late-night post, which will probably be the only way I can squeeze some in right now, but it works.

I am hoping you can still enjoy a cup of coffee no matter what time you are reading this. I already enjoyed three today myself.

I do have some mail day posts from others to post and wanted to post first, but I didn't have the time for that tonight so wanted to do a quick post instead.

*yawns a little, but is more focused tonight than the last post*

I am sure some of you reading tonight's post title are like, who is Charles Martinet while others are like, oh-I know who that is!

If any of you are gamers or even know the name Mario, I am sure you know who Martinet is. 

He is the original voice of Mario for the Nintendo video games and was Mario from 1991 up until he retired in 2023. The new guy just isn't the same. You can tell the difference.

I remember playing Super Mario Bros with my friend growing up plenty of times and even today, I find myself occasionally playing some Mario Kart or Mario Party when I have free time. Most of that time when I do play it's with and against family.

And I am not that great at it. Nothing I can brag about that's for sure.

But, as with most of my non-sport pickups, its nostalgia driven.

So, when I found out he was on the 2024 Leaf Pop Century checklist, I had to have a copy.

 

And it did not disappoint. Clean signature and a cool Mario drawing that adds a special touch.

This copy is /6. I didn't care if it was numbered or not, I just wanted a copy.

Martinet is one of a few recent autograph additions to my Non-Sport PC. I have been putting a bigger emphasis on adding more non-sports than sports recently.

I can't wait to show those off and the cool cards I got in the mail from others.

Encouraging

Hey Guys! I am still here, I promise. And I have coffee.

*takes a sip*

One week ago, I had my kidney stent removed and since it had been in so long, they were actually able to retrieve the stone without having to use a laser to blast it out from the inside. I kind of wished I had known that would have been the case as I would have kept the stone as a reminder to make sure I drink more than the average person when it comes to water. I have not heard the results yet of the stone's make up to see what kind it was in order to figure out what made it. I can only assume it's my water intake.

The other good news was that the urologist took a look around in that kidney and saw no further stones. I am not sure if she checked both or just the one. But, I will take any good news this year.

I am in a much slower recovery than I had anticipated, last time I remember I was better in a couple days and back to myself. This time I would say I am about 90% back at this point. But, I try to also remember I am a few years older as well.

I haven't had a lot of time to sit down and write up a post to give all of you an update. I have had a crazy week since. My nephew, wife and adorable 7-month old daughter came up for a visit from Tennessee on Sunday. Followed by what I like to call another #2024. What is #2024? It's all of the crud and kicks in the crotch I have suffered this year. On Wednesday I suffered another. This time the alternator went in my car while I was driving it (thought I was going to have a heart attack when all of it powered down and I had no idea what to do) and long story short, I am out of $700. Something I was not planning on and didn't really have the funds for but it' just sums up my #2024.

Despite that, I did get some encouraging mail days the day of my surgery when I got home.

 

First one, was a surprise from KOVB. Sorry if I am blanking on who you are right this second and hope you see this, I have been through a lot this year so I have been having a lot of blanking moments, but I wanted to make sure to say thank you. The Rodney was sweet, but the note is where it really hit me. I actually hung it up in my card room.

Next up, another surprise was found this time from Twitter trading friend Dan.

 

 

He sent me some Giants along with a

centerfold in his centerfold. Nice addition to my non-sports PC. She was known for her appearances on Baywatch and Playboy.

Before I close up today's post, I also wanted to show the other crazy thing that happened the day after my surgery.

We got snowed in! More than 12 inches fell last Saturday.

A week later though, some warm temps and lots of rain has eliminated most of it.

My 2024 has been rough, but I can say I am still alive, on the mend, have some great hobby friends, coffee and some cards. So to me, all of that's encouraging.

Thank you to all of you who have reached out, commented, messaged, etc. I am glad to have such a great circle.

Love Is In The Air

Sometimes when there is love, there is pain. Today I am feeling the pain from my surgery yesterday. As I expected, the Urologist couldn't reach the kidney stone and I had a stent placed to help widen my ureters so they can reach the stone in two weeks.

TWO WHAT'S GOING TO BE VERY LONG WEEKS.

All I can say is imagine without too much TMI having to run to the bathroom every hour and a half, going to the bathroom feeling like you are letting go of acid while a mule or donkey kicks in you the kidneys and that's how I feel.

And I went all day yesterday without coffee. NO COFFEE is pain alone.

That changes today. Even though the pain from the stent is there, I was not going empty handed on the coffee end. Especially on Valentine's Day with an item I love.

*takes a sip, maybe kisses it*

Let's move onto something more positive, because today is Valentine's Day and love is in the air. 

Have you ever just saw a card and immediately fell in love with it? Like you needed it and can't live without it?

I had that recently and I am sure you have as well.

When I saw this 2023 Leaf Pop Century Proof Walk Of Fame Kaleidoscope 1/1 of Chevy Chase, I knew I needed it for my PC of him.

The front of the card features like a star/space appeal that my lightbox couldn't even fully capture it's beauty.

The back of the card has a guarantee and a shiny appeal. I didn't undo the Leaf sticker to look closer at the back. My hobby OCD wouldn't allow such things.

Before I close out today's post, I wanted to wish my wife a Happy Valentine's Day and that I love you. I am never sure which posts she reads or doesn't.

As for the rest of you, I love reading your guys comments and your input about this blog. So, I guess you can say I love you guys!

As Long As We Got Each Other

*takes a seat, sits down and tries to squeeze in a post today. the internet was acting up again yesterday but because of the snow. Coffee ready, it's time for a new Cards Over Coffee*

If you grew up in the late 80's and early 90s, it would surprise me if you hadn't heard of or watched Growing Pains. The show ran from September of 1985 to April of 1992 and featured a pretty solid cast led by the late Allan Thicke and Kirk Cameron.

The show was about the Seaver family who lived in Long Island, NY. Psychiatrist Jason Seaver (Thicke) works from home both as a Dr and as a father who watched over his three kids while his wife Maggie, a reporter, worked. The three kids each had different personalities and brought different challenges to the table. There was ladies' man Mike (Cameron), the good student Carol and rambunctious younger brother Ben. The basis of the show was about raising the kids and the challenges or Growing Pains of doing so. They tackled a lot of issues on the show such as drugs, suicide, peer pressure, and alcohol to name a few. But, in the end, if they were together, they could face any of those problems that arose together. 

I remember watching it religiously on ABC every time it came on and having that theme song stuck in my head until the following week. A lot of the problems the Seaver kids faced on the show weren't anything I could relate to at the age I watched it, but there were some I did face later on with friends. which made me think back to the show.

I can't imagine the topics the show would have to cover today if it was still going on.....

In the past year, I have added a few autographs from the show since I watched it and since that is how I grow my non sport PC. I added an Allan Thicke and Jeremy Miller last year and now have added a third one with today's addition of a dual autograph thanks to my buddy Valley Of Cards.

I would be curious if you guys watched the show in comments and your thoughts on it. I am glad they never remade it as remakes are awful. Though I will say I haven't watched any of the new Wonder Years to see if that is or not.

I think we could learn a lot from Growing Pains to use in today's culture and challenges that kids face or even us as adults face. What we need to realize despite everything going on in the world, is to take the one line from the theme song and apply that to our lives. Because As Long As We Got Each Other, we can tackle any problem in the world. We need each other's back in these trying times.

Coffee With Ed Asner

*it's early but coffee is in order. When isn't it? Takes a sip, gets ready for another new #CardsOverCoffee. You know you want it!*

On August 29th, 2021 we lost a legend on the big screen in Ed Asner who passed away at the age of 91.

Even though most remember him as Lou Grant on the Mary Tyler Show and the spinoff Lou Grant, I remember him more in other films and television spots. Some of those are his voice acting of Roland Daggett in Batman The Animated Series, Christmas Vacation 2, Elf (he made a great Santa) and of course the award winning Up.

But, he was in so much more.

*takes a sip, remembering watching him on Elf as Santa and realizing we aren't too far from watching that again*

He had been an autograph need on my list for a few years and I waited a little too long since he had passed which drives up prices, but I paid because I still wanted it.

He has a nice signature,

Nostalgia is always a driving point for my non sport pickups, Ed falls under that category for some of his roles.

One thing I haven't mentioned yet about Ed Asner was that he came locally a few years ago and did a one man show my mother-in-law went to go see. She was also able to snap a few photos of him during his act, one of which she gave to me but I forgot to include in this post. I found that pretty cool as well. I pushed for her to grab an autograph as well but guess he didn't do any signing afterwards.

Coffee With Emilio Estevez

*after an extremely busy morning, it's time to sit down, enjoy a cup of hot coffee on this warm-muggy fall day. Oh, it's also time for some Cards Over Coffee and a little quacking while I am at it, QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK!!!!!!!!*

It had been well over 20 years since I watched The Mighty Duck movies so last week I figured it was time to re-watch them again. I think as an adult I thoroughly enjoyed them more than I did when I was a kid.

Watching those movies again reminded me about how great Emilio Estevez is. Movies such as Maximum Overdrive, St.Elmo's Fire (great song to by the way), Young Guns and my favorite of his besides The Mighty Ducks in Breakfast Club.

The reminding led to me to searching for an autograph card of his and I found one pretty quickly made by Leaf Pop Century and snatched it up.

I was able to grab this card cheaper than the other versions online and for a low budget collector, that is always a win.

 

Nice looking card with the shine. The autograph needs some work, but not the worst I have seen.

Back of card is kinda lame. I wished they would not only put the guarantee, but maybe some information piece on the actor or actress that lets us know what films they were in.

I saw there is a new The Mighty Duck series on Disney+ called The Mighty Ducks:The Game Changers I will have to check out. Though my streaming internet here is terrible so I could probably only watch a few episodes a month.

Coffee With George Lopez

*takes a sip of coffee, get's ready for a new Coffee With post. I haven't done one of these in some time. Coffee's hot and so won't this post be*

Sometimes I simply don't give some shows a chance and by doing so I may miss out on something special. I realized this in 2020.

When my wife goes to work on the weekends, I usually sit down with a cup of coffee-no surprise there-grab my laptop and turn on a show or movie to watch. It started out with some Halloween/Christmas movies, then it was Seinfeld, but after their time slot changed, George Lopez show took its spot.

I had never really sat down to watch George Lopez before I did that day. And honestly, it blew me away. I was literally laughing out loud and loved every second of the show.

With that being said, I needed a George Lopez autograph for my PC.

There was a fairly decent priced Leaf Pop Century one on eBay, so I grabbed it. The card was a blue parallel which also happens to be my favorite color.

 

It is also numbered to 25.

George was not only the star of his own show, but he also has done tons of stand-up comedy, voices in cartoons and has been in a few movies. 

I would say the George Lopez show may be one of the best underrated comedies ever. If you need a good laugh, just give it a watch. I would be surprised if you weren't laughing in the first five minutes.
