The Rodney Brew: 2023 Spectra Psychedelic /5

It's a Sunday without football, unless you count that horrible Pro Bowl games, so it's going to be a long wait to the Super Bowl.

At least I have my coffee. And my cards. And Cards Over Coffee.

Then after that, a longer wait until Free Agency which I find just as much fun. Especially since the Giants have some money to spend.

Speaking of the Giants, I have a new Rodney.

This is my latest add to my 2023 Spectra chase. This chase has been a slow-go with not too many popping up and many to chase.

This is one of the rare ones to find being limited to only 5.

I now have 9 of the 13 total in this run. Who in their right mind creates 13 autograph parallels??? Especially since most look the same.

Thanks goes out to former blogger and good friend Wes for helping me acquire this one.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday.

The Rodney Brew: 2023 Topps Resurgence Green Surge

It's almost been a year to the day since I last published one of these segment posts. With the lack of action on Sport Card Collectors blog on these or any of my posts and the lack of desire to do more than one blog or have time to in my life, welcome back The Rodney Brew.

What's The Rodney Brew. It's a very special brew that involves in my latest Rodney Hampton adds to my Super PC and I have some whoppers to show off but also a couple cool ones as well.

Like this 2023 Topps Resurgence Green Surge that is numbered to 175.

I really like the look of these despite missing the logos.

But, the backs, well.....terrible.

Well, that does it for today's card and quick post. I need to get my mind wrapped around what is the last game of my NFL season as the Giants take on the Eagles today. Sadly, I can't watch it as the Patriots are on TV instead and the site methstreams I have been using to stream has been pulled too. It will be watching for updates kind of game.

Hope everyone has a great last week of the NFL regular season Sunday. May your team be victorious! Unless you are an Eagles fan. Then I am sorry. We can just bond over coffee but not football.

A Resurgence Of Rodney

*coffee is prepped, I have cards nearby, breakfast as well. mmmm pumpkin donut.*

*takes a bite, a sip and moves on with today's post*

The last two posts on this blog have specifically been about the resurgence of Rodney activity in the hobby after a short layoff.

It has come though in full force as I have not been able to keep one focus or keep track of one product with him in it.

And it doesn't help that there is SO MUCH out there to chase.

This is both a complaint, but also some joy knowing that the end of my Rodney chasing isn't over yet.

*takes another sip, another bite, another sip. pure bliss*

Today's cards are from the 2023 Topps Composite product. As opposed to the inserts in the last post from the same product, these are the autographs. There are tons of them in the product with some just being autograph and others coming with dual relics.

Let's kick it off and don't mind me for messing up the parallels on these. They are awfully hard to figure out.
Base auto.

Teal Surge /149

White Surge /125

Blue Surge /75

Lime Green Power Surge /25

Geometric Green /20

And the final card is the Amped dual relic auto. One of many there are. They just go for way too much and are overpriced.

This is the purple parallel /99.

Well this is all I have for now.

This also marked all of the new Rodney's that I have for now.

*takes another bite to finish the donut, sip of coffee, then finishes up today's post before moving onto the second donut*

I think these look pretty cool and as Topps lands the NFL license soon, they will look even better and give them more opportunities. Question is though, will they continue to plug Rodney into their products.

For now, I will enjoy this resurgence of Rodney and collect what I can of it.

Have a great day.

Grounded

Hey! I am back for my first post of October and it's on a football Sunday. So you know what that means....time to drink some coffee, watch some football and share some football cards.

And don't worry about the title of this post. Grounded doesn't mean my wife took my laptop away and I can't type or that my parents told me to stay in my room or that I went out and about and caused some ruckus or didn't eat my broccoli. Which by the way is my favorite vegetable when it's cooked.

You will see in just a second why the title is the way it is.

*takes a sip*

In my last post I mentioned how both Panini and Topps have flooded the market with Rodney Hamptons. For the first time in awhile, like late 90's, thanks to Topps Composite I am able to chase some Rodney Hampton inserts.

And it wouldn't be today's times if these inserts didn't have a decent amount of parallels.

The insert line is called Grounded. .Makes sense for it to be all running backs which Rodney was.

I spent a good amount of time chasing these first instead of the overpriced autographs,
This is the base.

Refractor

Lazer

Pink Refractor

X-Factor

Green /99

Blue Wave /75

Gold /50

Orange /25

Red /5

And I believe I have all of them except the Superfractor. Which I will probably never be able to land if it ever gets pulled.

I am still happy where I am at with this chase however.

*takes a sip before finishing up today's post*

The non logos on these don't bother me as much as I expected, I think the busy design behind it helps. Hopefully the super will get pulled and by some miracle ends up with me.

As for rest of the product Composite, I do have some of the autographs I will wait to share in my next post. I must apologize for the Rodney influx posts but it's really all I have been getting in the mail and have nothing else to share otherwise.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday.

You Didn't Think I Would Miss It Did You?

It may have taken me all day for this, but I promise you I won't forget to post on National Coffee Day.

What kind of Coffee Card Blogger Would I be? (this is where you say a bad one if I did)

Since it's late, I won't be drinking any beverage while I put this post quickly together, but I will tell you I did have a couple cups earlier today to celebrate. It wasn't quite the Dunkin run I had wanted to make, but was just too busy and didn't quite have the time to celebrate like I had wanted.

It's just the way things are right now.

My original plan for today's post was just to post about the coffee day but figured it wouldn't be Cards Over Coffee without some cards.

So, let's check out my latest Rodney Hampton adds since 2023 products have put out a ton of them. In the last two months, Rodney has had new cards in Select, Topps Composite, Topps Motif and I just found out yesterday he will be in 2023 Panini National Treasures as well. With all of these, there was 60+ new Rodney's out there to chase. Pretty much an impossible one with TONS of 1/1's.

My new method to this is just add what I can because I don't have the finances. I can only add stuff when I get the gift cards to do so from reward apps that I am apart of. I must be stingy and don't overdo it. There are some going for a lot more than they should be for Rodney. I must be patient and wait which isn't the easiest thing.

This method has costed me some low numbered ones from Select such as the /10 and /5 ones. I just hope they will pop up again.

This is the base silver /399.  A nice guy on Twitter sent me this one as a RAK.

This a blue /99.

And finally a Tie Dye Die Cut /25.

This is all I have for now and there is more to go including two 1/1's. Yes, TWO.

*yawns before finishing up tonight's post*

I hope everyone was able to celebrate National Coffee Day the way it needs to be celebrated. Not sure where the parades were today but this is a Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade level day.

Oh, before I close, I always welcome Dunkin' gift cards in my email inbox (sportcardcollectors@hotmail.com) to help celebrate or as a thank you :)

Let me know how you celebrated the holiday in comments and/or if you have a player you collect that recently got bombarded with a ton of new cards from recent products.

What $25 On COMC Scored Me

Good Morning Coffee Card Enthusiasts!

Hope you have some coffee, cards and am ready to sit down to see my latest post.

Today I am showcasing a mail day from COMC that I got from writing an article for them. Guest bloggers can score themselves a $25 score credit for any accepted article submission and since I had one accepted, I got the store credit.

Seemed like a good deal to me. I like to write and get my writing out there and the store credit is just a bonus.

*takes a sip*

When I got my store credit, there were many avenues I could have taken. There was a couple of Rodney Hamptons I needed, there were Eli Mannings galore, there were some set needs, there were some non-sports I would have liked, but in the end, I decided my Marvel Collection needed some love since it had been a while.

Up first I scored these two Purple PMG's I needed for my chase. These two now gives me three of the five Black Panther ones.

Guardians Of The Galaxy is my favorite movie series of Marvel, and this dual relic was dirt cheap, why not add it?

And technically this was the end of my buying.

That's because I needed some credit left to ship the cards to me since I didn't have any other funds to use.
Including this Rodney Hampton autograph that I won in a contest three years ago from COMC but couldn't afford to ship. I did already have this Rodney, but he needed to come home finally.

Hopefully I will have more articles published on COMC so I can do this all over again.

*takes a sip before finishing up today's post*

I think next time I will take a different approach to my buying on there. I always say, more is better and stretch that money out. However, I am very happy with the $25 I did spend.

Hope everyone has a great Saturday.

Blog Bat Around- The Last Base Card

John over at John's Big League Baseball Blog came up with a new Blog Bat Around and I was all on board to participate.

Most of the Blog Bat Arounds I participate in. The ones I don't either I don't see, or they are a bit more challenging, and I am too lazy to dig stuff out for.

John's challenge was to post a last base card of your favorite player. I took this another route as I chose to post one of his first and one of his last. It had to be a base card, no inserts, autographs, relics or any of that fancy stuff.

Which isn't too hard for me as I have plenty of favorite players and base of them.

Choosing a player was pretty simple as the first player that came to my mind for me should be the one that comes to mind first, Rodney Hampton.
This is his 1990 Topps rookie card. I have close to 100 of these. It was a weird challenge to myself if you are curious why.

And one of his final, he has like six with three being different levels from Black Diamond, from 1998 Score.

Rodney played his entire career for the Giants from 1990-1997. He rushed for consecutive 1000-yard seasons from 1991-1995. After the 1995 season, Rodney was offered a Free Agent offer sheet by the 49ers which the Giants quickly and fortunately matched. 1996 season he shared carries season with Tyrone Wheatley and fell short of his usual 1000-yard season. Only to get hurt in the season which costed him most of the 1997 season except two games and one playoff game. He was then cut by the Giants prior to the 1998 season and never was signed so he decided to retire. Which is what I like. I wanted to make sure he was a Giant for life unlike some other running backs I know....

If you haven't joined in yet on this Blog Bat Around, go do so. It was fun.

In the meantime, drink your coffee, and have a happy and safe Memorial Day.

81.2%

It's been a hot week here with temps sitting at 83 and above. Which may not sound warm to most of you, but, for here, it's hot.

But here I am still sitting with a hot coffee and some hot cards with a hot new post.

*takes a sip*

I kept pushing off adding my Rodney Hampton collection on TCDB, then decided it was finally time when I was doing some research on there and saw my rankings in the 600's with a couple of cards I must have added years ago.

Knowing I am the king of Rodney, I couldn't let that stand.

So, I went to work and input all of the Rodney's I had. Come to find out, Rodney has 962 total cards and I own 81.2% of those. Which is incredible when you really think about it. Think about all of the rare 90's inserts/parallels and the 1/1's that have been added over the years.

However, when it comes to a real total of Rodney cards, my number doesn't match that one as TCDB doesn't cover all of the oddball cards that were out there. Including uncut sheets, proofs, and uncut cards.

Which I own some of each and here is an example of some,
Rodney mini poster.

A cut autograph from The Bar Hybrid Edition.

Uncut Fleer Ultra Sensations card featuring Rodney Hampton and Jerry Rice.

And probably my favorite one, an uncut 1995 Finest dual refractor of Rodney and Junior Seau. This is a thing of beauty.

I haven't had a chance to count up all of my oddballs to have an exact number of Rodney's yet, but hopefully will soon.

As expected, here is my ranking on TCDB for Rodney,

Pretty far at the top. The second-place person actually has some I need believe it or not. If anyone does any form of trading on there and want to snatch those up for me, let me know. I will trade with you for doing so.

*takes a sip before finishing up today's post*

My next project is to add my Kerry Collins collection to TCDB. I am currently unranked as I only added one card so I could see my rating. It will be interesting if I can make a run at first place there as well. The current person in first has 517 out of the 2,834 total cards Collins has. I believe my last count for Kerry was at 600.

I will do a Collins post at some point when I add mine.

I hope all of you have a great Friday!

Encouraging

Hey Guys! I am still here, I promise. And I have coffee.

*takes a sip*

One week ago, I had my kidney stent removed and since it had been in so long, they were actually able to retrieve the stone without having to use a laser to blast it out from the inside. I kind of wished I had known that would have been the case as I would have kept the stone as a reminder to make sure I drink more than the average person when it comes to water. I have not heard the results yet of the stone's make up to see what kind it was in order to figure out what made it. I can only assume it's my water intake.

The other good news was that the urologist took a look around in that kidney and saw no further stones. I am not sure if she checked both or just the one. But, I will take any good news this year.

I am in a much slower recovery than I had anticipated, last time I remember I was better in a couple days and back to myself. This time I would say I am about 90% back at this point. But, I try to also remember I am a few years older as well.

I haven't had a lot of time to sit down and write up a post to give all of you an update. I have had a crazy week since. My nephew, wife and adorable 7-month old daughter came up for a visit from Tennessee on Sunday. Followed by what I like to call another #2024. What is #2024? It's all of the crud and kicks in the crotch I have suffered this year. On Wednesday I suffered another. This time the alternator went in my car while I was driving it (thought I was going to have a heart attack when all of it powered down and I had no idea what to do) and long story short, I am out of $700. Something I was not planning on and didn't really have the funds for but it' just sums up my #2024.

Despite that, I did get some encouraging mail days the day of my surgery when I got home.

First one, was a surprise from KOVB. Sorry if I am blanking on who you are right this second and hope you see this, I have been through a lot this year so I have been having a lot of blanking moments, but I wanted to make sure to say thank you. The Rodney was sweet, but the note is where it really hit me. I actually hung it up in my card room.

Next up, another surprise was found this time from Twitter trading friend Dan.

He sent me some Giants along with a

centerfold in his centerfold. Nice addition to my non-sports PC. She was known for her appearances on Baywatch and Playboy.

Thanks Dan. Means a lot!

*takes a sip before finishing up today's post*

Before I close up today's post, I also wanted to show the other crazy thing that happened the day after my surgery.

We got snowed in! More than 12 inches fell last Saturday.

A week later though, some warm temps and lots of rain has eliminated most of it.

My 2024 has been rough, but I can say I am still alive, on the mend, have some great hobby friends, coffee and some cards. So to me, all of that's encouraging.

Thank you to all of you who have reached out, commented, messaged, etc. I am glad to have such a great circle.

The Rodney Brew:2023 Certified Pink Autograph /75

*coffee is hot and I am ready for another new post on Cards Over Coffee*

It's the day I always dread, the final Sunday of football for me.

The Giants once again failed to make the playoffs, something that has been a common trend in the last 10 years.

At least I can hold onto hope from last season right? Daboll has got to have this team going in the right direction, doesn't he? I can only hope. I continue to struggle with breathing when I have to wear a paper bag over my head every year.

I am just hoping the Giants can end today with a W. It's just time to beat the Eagles already after losing the last five to them including the playoffs. They came close last time, let's see what happens at home with an Eagles team that is struggling.

If another loss, which is what I expect, we can at least celebrate today with a victory in terms of a newest Rodney, right?

*takes a sip, coffee is at its best when its freshest state*

When I found out that 2023 Certified football included Rodney autographs this year, which eBay notified me about, I immediately started my chase. But, the first few Rodney's were way overpriced like most cards are when they first release.

I wasn't going to overpay for Rodney even being a Super Collector.

Prices have since dropped and so haven't more Rodney's and I have been able to add a few....quite a few.

Today's Certified Rodney is the pink parallel which is numbered to 75.
Oooooo shiny.

Back of card, pretty basic Panini stuff with nothing but a copy of the front of the card and an autograph guarantee.

Here is an overall look at the chase in 2023 Certified for Rodney,
Base /199, Bronze /99, Pink /75, Orange /50, Red /35, Blue /30, Teal /25, Gold /15, Purple /10, Green /5, and Black 1/1.

Which isn't too terrible comparing it to other products that include a lot of parallels.

There will be more updates to come from this chase. I can say though, the 1/1 has not popped up yet and I keep waiting for it to.

Good luck to my Giants today, they will need it. Also, if this is it for Sterling Shepard and Saquon Barkley, thank you for what you did for the G-Men. Thanks for being true Giants.

Have a great rest of the NFL season today.

The Rodney Brew: 1992 Sports Card Price Guide Monthly Uncut Sheet

*the first cup of a new month. tastes as good as the previous months, except i can say it's a new month*

*takes a sip*

The blogging community is full of great individuals who are always looking out for each other.

At the beginning of June, yes another one of these "it's taking me forever to post" posts and Angus from Dawg Day Cards sent me an email and told me that he had bought a pile of magazines from a show and in the pile was an uncut sheet featuring Rodney Hampton and wanted to know if I was interested.

And you know what...I was!

I had the card already, but I did not have an uncut sheet of it and it was going to be a great addition to my uncut Rodney sheets.

In the mail about a week or two later....
Came the uncut sheet featuring a mix of players including the most important one on it, Rodney.

The back of sheet features what card each player was first featured on which for Rodney was 1990 Upper Deck and which one was his most valuable which was the 1990 Topps Supplemental. Sadly that card can be had for cents now-a-days.

Thanks again to Angus for this great addition to my Rodney collection. If you haven't checked out his blog or added him to your blogroll, please do as I linked his blog above.

Hope everyone has a great Saturday and make sure you finish that cup of coffee you forgot about on the counter.

The State Of The Hobby: 90's Parallels/Inserts

*takes a sip, feels a little angered from the newest faze from the hobby. takes an angry sip. gets ready for a new #CardsOverCoffee post to let out that frustration*

The influx of money hungry card chasers in the hobby have finally dug their way into the depths of my favorite part of collecting, the late 90's.

First they cleaned off retail shelves, then they drove up prices on retail and hobby products, and now they are driving insert and parallel prices up from the 90's including guys like Rodney Hampton, Charles Way and Kerry Collins that I collect.

Check out this sale on a Rodney Hampton Red PMG. When I acquired my version of this card it was $60, which I still thought it was steep. Yes, it's raw unlike this one, but still, it's Rodney Hampton. There is no reason for a card like this to be this high.

Check out these sales as well. Kerry Collins for over $300?? Dave Brown, yes, Dave Brown raw sold for over $200. You could have landed that card for probably $20 two years ago. Same with Tony Brackens.

It's not just PMG's that are going nuts either. There are other 90's parallels and inserts feeling the heat too.

Let's take a look at a couple 1997 Skybox Premium Rubies. Can you imagine spending $76.99 on a Jay Graham card..EVER IN YOUR LIFE??? Or even $71.99 on a Ronnie McAda version. Who?? I know Graham at least but I actually had to Google who McAda was. Which he was Mr.Irrelevant in the 1997 NFL Draft and was drafted from the United States Military Academy. It appears he never had a snap in the NFL.

But, yet someone forked out $72 for him.

These are only a couple of examples for the craziness going on and the prices others are driving up on these cards.

Some of which I still need for my player collections. Speaking of which, I have a story to tell but first...

*takes an angry sip, you know, one of those loud slurps*

*takes another. returns to the keyboard to tell a story*

A guy on Instagram contacted me about a month ago after he noticed some of the players I collected and asked if I was interested in seeing some cards of those players he had.

I wished I had said no.

He had an amazing assortment of PMG's, Ex Credentials and a 1997 Skybox Rubies Rodney Hampton which besides the Green PMG, is my most wanted Hampton card. Immediately I inquired about a trade, which he was fine with doing but preferred to sell. So, I asked for trade value and this is the part that got me.

Overall, the cards he showed me had close to $1200 in trade value. These players included Kerry Collins, Charles Way, Tyrone Wheatley, Jessie Armstead, and Rodney Hampton by the way. I thought the number was steeper than Mount Everest so I tried just trading for the Skybox Rubies Hampton which alone was over $250 in trade value. Even though I really wanted those cards, especially the Hampton, thinking about the cards I would have had to give up to land those was overwhelming. I had to back out and cry in a corner with a cup of coffee.

Since then, I have seen a few of those cards list on eBay with a starting bid of $99. None of which ever received a bid. I am not sure if he still has those cards or not, but if I ever start to see the values dip I may check in with him again.

*takes a sip before finishing up today's post*

It's a sad hobby world when you collect the least popular players, and they have values of Hall Of Famers or more than them. Do you know how many vintage cards or Hall Of Fame autographs you can land for $1200? Yeah, exactly. Even though it was really hard for me to pass up, I made the right decision in the end.

I just wish that deep pockets would stay out of my woods of collecting.

Thoughts on today's post and if you would have done that trade deal is welcomed in comments.

Hope everyone has a fantastic Friday, the weekend is near!
