Another HOFer Knocked Down

I always feel bad when I sit on a mail day for so long without posting about it, but, as we all know life gets in the way.

It's not that the mail day isn't appreciated by any means, especially one like today's, it just happens.

Today's mail day is from my buddy @CardpocalypseNC on Twitter who hit me up with a really nice mail day in our latest trade.

*takes a sip before moving on with today's post*

I would call this a yearlong trade and there were more cards than I am showing involved in this trade, but I am only posting the key cards in it.

Kerry Collins refractor /250. Always like a hard to find refractor for my key PC's.

It's a Anna Kournikova card, do I need a reason?

1997 Fleer Metal Universe base card of Jim Harbaugh. I haven't seen this one before, but it has a Halloween feel to it.

For my next card, if you didn't know already, I have been chasing all of the RL Stine cards from 2020 Allen Ginter. RL is the reason I am writing today as he was my biggest inspiration growing up.

This is a 1/1, my first 1/1 of his, Topps Vault Blank Back card.

I believe this is also my first Topps Vault card.

My final card has been sitting on my want list for so, so long and now I have it....

Jim Kelly autograph! I finally get to knock it off of my HOFer autograph list. I still have more to go, but it always feels nice to have one down. It has been a while since I was last able to do so.

Tim's mail day is one of many I have in drafts that really need to be published and shared. It's just finding the time to do so and over the next few weeks my time will be very tight. I do have some posts already put together to cover me for the next few weeks or you guys would be cup-less otherwise.

Unfinished Cup:1996 Playoff Absolute Football

My coffee is ready, so let's get onto another new post on Cards Over Coffee.

This marks my 6th day in a row with a post on here, I can't remember the last time I was able to pull that off. However, I am hoping not to disappoint you guys by posting yet another Unfinished Cup post. I knew there would be a lot of posts in this series, but I had expected to spread them out a little more. With no incoming mail days, there isn't really much else to post about right now.

So, I apologize for another one of these today.

 Anyways, let's get on with today's post.

Sometime, when I have more time and am not lazy (I know I am not the only blogger who admits to this), I should list off my Top 10 favorite base cards sets of the 90's. I mention this because today's base card set would be on there.

 

1996 Playoff Absolute absolutely nails a unique base design by putting players on a card with their team stadium in the background. It's not anything that had been seen yet and not even seen today again. I think this kind of design is pleasing to the eyes.

I remember opening up a few packs back in the day, but never considered chasing the base set. It is a challenging one to chase as there are multiple tiers to the set. The only way you could pull some of the tiers was opening up the pack that was within the pack of cards. Did you comprehend that or need to read that again? There was an unopened pack within the unopened pack of cards which contained the harder-to-find base cards. Another unique part of the product.

So this makes my chase a little tougher so my want list is deep on this one,

Celebrity Captains

*sits down on this chilly 5 degree morning with a steaming hot cup of coffee. breakfast has already been eaten so it's time for some cards and coffee*

Posting on this blog is a little different than any other blog I have posted on. I can't post just anything that I normally would. This blog has specifics which makes it a little tough when I get mail days and the thank yous make it to Twitter instead of here.

I can't explain my reasoning on this, it's just the way it is and it has worked on here. It just forces me to have difficulty in posting stuff I sometimes want to.

I am a few mail days behind posting on here and some on Twitter as well. I also have a stack of ideas I want to post, but they don't fit the theme of this blog. I will have to sort that all out at some point so don't take offense if your mail day to me doesn't make the blog. It doesn't mean I didn't appreciate the mail day or that it meant any less, it just means I am a college with twenty superstar applications that I have to narrow down to only seven openings.

For today, I am posting one of those seven that made it in. This mail day has been sitting in drafts for awhile despite showing off the new picture taking background that will overtake the blog soon.

In one of my last trades with blog reader Oren, he discovered a subset that I wanted the set and never knew I wanted.

I don't collect a lot of hockey cards, but those that I do have got to have nostalgia tied in. The 1991-1992 Pro Set Platinum set included some non hockey players in its large base set. 1991-92 was the NHL’s 75th Anniversary, and every team appointed a Celebrity Captain for that season. Pro Set Platinum made cards for 12 of those captains and some you can consider "rookie cards" of.

Some of the chosen captains, I have no idea who they are but others bring me back to a happy place.

Let's take a look. First, some I don't know so well.

Mr. Rogers. Who didn't watch his PBS program??? I have so many memories of it though I was creeped out by a couple of the puppets. One of those is Lady Elaine Farichilde....now I am spooked and almost spilled my coffee.

According to Jim...he had a TV show.

Jim Kelly...he showed the Sabres how to win...except the big game.

Larry King...a voice you heard somewhere in your lifetime.

Marv Albert, the sports voice of my childhood with the NBA and especially my NY Knicks.

90's Cards Over Coffee:1996 Pinnacle Mint Football Box Break

*watching the snow fall...AGAIN...and I picture myself drinking coffee somewhere warm...and then I come back down to earth and at least my coffee is warm. I could use a distraction so guess it's time for some Coins...I mean Cards Over Coffee*

Every year, Shane from Cheap Wax Wednesday fame and myself pull off a fall trade that usually includes some...well..cheap wax.

This past fall we pulled off another one of those massive trades and I have been sitting on some boxes to post about.

First up, a box of 1996 Pinnacle Mint football.

I have already busted a box of this a couple years ago and had so much fun that I wanted to do it again. It's a product that brings two hobbies into one and brings me a lot of nostalgic memories back when I opened some packs at 13 years old.

So now we know what must happen..

*takes a sip, begins to rip*

Each box of 1996 Pinnacle Mint football comes with 16 packs. Each pack comes with three cards, two cards with a die cut hole in the middle, one base and two coins in a plastic holder. Box price, I have no idea now. But, with today's hobby, it's gone crazy I am sure.

There are 30 base Bronze cards to collect. Sadly only one NY Giant but the rest of the set is mainly the stars of the 90's. The one Giant isn't even Rodney Hampton, it's Dave "I throw tons of interceptions" Brown.

There are also 30 Silver parallels as well that fall 1:20 packs.

You can also find Gold parallels as well.

I need to gather the die cuts and base to see how far I am on those sets and make a list of needs if so. I don't think at this time I will bother chasing the parallel sets with only a few in-hand.

*takes another sip, then another. The snow continues to fall heavily with an expected amount of 1-3 inches today. Another sip is due and more cups to come after this one is finished*

Also in this product are the die cut cards. These die cut cards are meant to be used for the coins to be inserted into.

*onto cup number two, now to check out the coins*

The coins come together as a two pack in every pack of 1996 Pinnacle Mint. Most of the time will be the brass coins which is the basic ones to find.

The coins feature a picture of a players face on one side and the Pinnacle Mint words on the other. I got a little lazy here and just posted all of my coins in one picture with just the faces. I pulled all of the good ones. I need to see if I finally have this set together.

I also found this Nickle parallel coin of Dan Marino that falls 1:20 packs. Next to it is the base brass so you can see the comparison.

And that does it for the break.

Once again that was a lot of fun. Brought me back to when I was 13 years old and found packs of these in a local craft store that had a solid display of cards. My father and I would volunteer to take my grandmother to the craft store so she could grab yarn and just so we had an excuse for my mother on why we went there. As I have said before, my mother was never and still is not a fan of the hobby. Of course she also didn't know of the packs we would hide in our coat pockets back then either. If she did, we would have become a missing persons case.

This is just Box one of four I have to post. So more to come and more coffee to come as well.
