The Trade Game

You can buy cards, you can sell cards, but nothing is better than trading cards. There are many ways to trade them, and I have done most of the ways to do so in what I like to call, The Trade Game.

In The Trade Game, it's funny how trades work out sometimes. Sometimes you win some, sometimes you don't. I remember a trade back in 2017 I made for a Patrick Mahomes Optic rookie card where I gave up six base autographs for it which at that time was an even deal. 

After a second Super Bowl win last night, I think Patrick Mahomes may be worth just a tad more now.

Other trades, I lost. For example, I traded away a rare Upper Deck Jeff Gordon fire suit relic for a Sp rookie card of an upcoming running back in Denver named Terrell Davis. At the time, it was a great trade. Then the injuries kicked in and it was a huge loss.

Then there are trades where you trade for a card intending to keep it, but then decide later on to trade it away. This is exactly what happened this past weekend with a recently acquired card.

A few weeks ago, before the NFC Championship game, I had been looking to add a Brock Purdy rookie card to my collection thinking he was going to continue his amazing run with the 49ers. I also needed one for my rookie card collection as I try to collect one rookie of everyone, and he has a limited amount of them out there. So, I gave up some decent RJ Barrett cards as I move away from collecting him and acquired the 2022 Chronicles Prestige rookie of Purdy.

Then came the NFC Championship game. Purdy got hurt early in the game and the 49ers lost to the Eagles badly. The end of his run was over and so was the end of his card values and possibly his future as starter on that team.

That usually doesn't affect whether I keep a card or not, but when I found out my father found two impossible-to-find blasters of 2022 Mosaic football and he wanted a Purdy rookie, I have to admit, it got me.

So, I drove an hour away to Walmart and traded him the Purdy rookie along with a couple other cards for the blaster box of Mosaic. This isn't the first time I have traded cards for wax with him as my desperation to rip open stuff sometimes overwhelms me when I hadn't opened anything in a while. The thrill of the pull!

My hope was that this box would replace the Purdy I traded away so I would have a rookie of his for my collection still, but, it didn't. It did however provide something much bigger which was great since I usually take a big loss on our past trades like this.

I am going to take a sip and then show you how this box break went.

Each blaster box of 2022 Mosaic football comes with 6 packs of 6 cards. Boxes run $35 each and no guarantees at all.

Here was my best base rookie card of the box. It was also a subset version of it with NFL Debut.

National Pride parallel is a new addition to this year's product. I would have gone right by it if I hadn't seen someone else post this parallel on one of the Facebook groups I am apart of. At least this is a card of the assumed 49ers starter.

Not bad silver pull. Treylon Burks had a few moments this season, but he had big shoes to fill in when they traded away AJ Brown.

Tyquan Throton Mosaic Parallel.

Here's a guy that knows a thing or two about winning Super Bowls.

Green on Green. The offensive Rookie Of The Year Garrett Wilson.

HoloFame Mosiac parallel insert of Jerome "The Bus" Bettis. He was a fun watch when he got running at full speed.

Touchdown Masters of last year Super Bowl MVP Cooper Kupp.

Holofame base insert of Warren Moon who felt like he played for every team in the league for 40 years.

Aaron Rodgers case hit Genesis parallel. Which I must mention I had my wife open up three packs and this was in her pack. She didn't know what this was and assumed it was a plain ole parallel, but I knew better. 

I would say my gamble for this trade paid off even though I am now in need of a Brock Purdy rookie card. I am sure someone out there must have one for PWE trade. Which leads me back to the trade game again. 

There is no right or wrong in trading, only fun.

Coffee Break:2021 Optic Football Blaster Box (relic pull!)

It's another football Sunday! Woooooooooooooo! I just hope it goes better than this past Monday Night's game.

With fall and football in the air, I decided it was time to finally post a box break I did awhile back that has been sitting in drafts waiting for me.

*takes a sip*

This year, Panini said, "hey-let's release all of the hot products at the end of the football card season all within weeks of each other" when it comes to Prizm, Optic and Select. I don't know what the strategy was to that, but it's been hard to find any of it on the shelf. I also wonder if they did it that way because of such a weak 2022 rookie class. That way they can still make some money.

I have been lucky so far to have been able to open a tiny bit of each product thanks to my father's timing in Walmart. He lives within minutes of it so in-between each job he does, he checks in to see if anything is on the shelf. Comes in really handy because otherwise, the "kid flipper" cleans off the shelf and I wouldn't have any.

Last month, my pops timed it right and grabbed me a blaster of Optic football. I wasn't sure what to expect from it, but I knew I just wanted some.

Each blaster box of 2021 Optic football comes with 6 packs of 4 cards each. There are no guarantees other than three purple shock parallels and each blaster box goes for $35. Once again, I miss the $20 box days.

I won't bother boring you with the base cards but will show off my Rated Rookie finds. At the time, I was super stoked to pull the Lance. Now that he is out for the season, not so much. Kids, don't invest in cards....EVER.

There are 200 cards in the regular base set and 100 cards in the Rated Rookie base set.

The inserts in Optic are kind of bland if they don't have some shine.

Legendary Logos is pretty cool. There are 20 cards in the set and all of them are holo silver.

The final pack also had a surprise....

 

Blasters no longer have relic guarantees, so just to pull one is cool now. Nothing big but looks cool.

Well, not too much to brag about in this break. I have set aside some of the cards I pulled in here for trading buddies I hope to send to them soon. For now, I will also tuck the Trey Lance cards away just in case.....unless I get a good trade offer for them.

I didn't get my hands onto a lot of football for 2021 so having the access to do so is exciting. Today I am breaking a box of 2021 Panini Limited which used to be a favorite to open but haven't opened too much the last few years so I am hoping it is still a fun one.

With football season starting this week, let's rip this box and hope for the best!

Every box of Panini Limited football comes with 3 packs of 5 cards each. You will find 2 autographs and 1 memorabilia card per box. Boxes run roughly $485.

BASE:

There are 100 base cards in the set to collect featuring all veterans.

PARALLELS:

You can find the following base cards parallels for Limited,

Silver /149, Gold /75, Ruby /49, Holographic /23, Amethyst /15, Emerald /10, Sapphire 1/1, and Printing Plates 1/1.

I pulled a gold, you can tell by the gold/rainbow foil on the card details. These are numbered to 75. Also, do you feel bad for Sam Darnold getting ditched again from a starting job or just think that he can't be a starting QB?

INSERTS:

There are only two insert sets to find in Limited. One is 2000 Limited Tribute Veterans and the other is 2000 Limited Tribute Rookies which is what I pulled.

Here is a Greg Rousseau. I like the throwback cards.

HITS:

My first hit is of former Eagle now Viking WR Jalen Reagor. This features a nice Patch piece.

My second hit was a Cole Kmet autograph. If you can call this an autograph.

 

And my final hit was a whopper! Trey Lance rookie patch autograph!! This is why there are no base card rookies, all rookies look like this in the set.

I think I need to find myself a Toney like that Lance.

OVERALL THOUGHTS:

This was a quick break with only 15 cards involved, but the Lance was a nice find. It was the card that saved this break, but still, the high prices on these boxes still didn't bring back the full value of the break.

But, from what I have seen online, there are some really cool hits to pull in here so maybe other breaks will bring back the value.

Coffee Break:2021 Prizm Football Hanger Box

I have been good boy recently when it comes to retail buying. I haven't been buying. Mostly because of lack of funds but also because I am trying to make better decisions of what I collect and open. No more of the I see, I need approach. I guess you can call it "Collecting Maturity".

There are some products still though that are weak spots for me because of the rookie cards and because of the shininess.

Today's Coffee Break is just that.

Since 2012, anytime I had the opportunity to open some Prizm football I have. It's my favorite Panini football product and every year I find myself chasing certain rookie cards and whatever NY Giants parallels I could get my hands on.

So, when my father picked up two hanger boxes of Prizm, I pleaded my case for one since I hadn't found any yet.

Luckily for me, he obliged.

Here is my first Prizm football rip,

Each hanger box of 2021 Panini Prizm football comes with 20 cards. There are no guarantees other than hopefully a good time....and 4 hanger exclusive Red Ice prizms. Each hanger costs $26.

BASE:

This years base set is 440 cards deep, which is huge for Prizm. Also makes it very hard to pull the good rookies.

Especially with only one per hanger box.

I have traded for two of my rookie wants from this years set with Lawrence and Toney, but still want to chase down Mac Jones, Zach Wilson, and Trey Lance.

INSERTS:

It's Prizm so it has a tendency to be overflowed with parallels, here are the options for inserts,

This was a pretty solid break with Trey Lance and Davis Mills. Not to mention I landed the Plaxico base card I needed for my Giants collection. There was nothing to complain about this break.

Wild Card Is Back!

*takes a sip, takes a bite of a delicious carrot muffin. I know it sounds odd, but it's like eating unfrosted carrot cake in muffin form and it's amazing. First time I have ever tried these.*

I have said before and I will say it again, the 90's for me were the best era of collecting. I am not talking 90-93, I am talking 94, especially 95-99 in those terms. Those cards, especially inserts, are still some of the most sought out cards today.

So when companies bring back old product names like Panini has with Donruss brands and Upper Deck has with Fleer/Skybox, I give them a try hoping to relive what once was.

Most of the time, those all fall flat since you can't remake what once was. So when I saw that Wild Card football had returned I was curious. Would there be a million stripe parallels? Great photography? Fun inserts?

I had to get my answers, so when I went to Walmart last Tuesday, I caught a blaster box of it on the shelf and picked it up for $23.

Before I opened it up, I knew already that it wasn't licensed by the teams or collegiate league and would be similar to Sage Or Leaf.

In each blaster box of 2021 Wild Card Matte, there are 4 packs of 10 cards. You can also find 2 blaster box exclusives per box.

 

The side of the box gives you a sneak peek of what kind of subsets, or as I would call them, inserts you will find.

Once again the definition of a subset is a set within the base set. Inserts are separate looking cards from the base set with different numbering such as X12 as opposed to the base set number of 125.

One of the first cards I found was one of the first I wanted in Kadarius Toney. I will say I found the base cards a little lacking. Not much action photography and it's a plain white background.

The back of the card was statistic free and only had one sentence about the player. The base cards all have a MBC-numbering.

Rookie Heat (which is by far the best looking insert of the group)

The product wasn't overly exciting, but, I will say comparing it to Leaf and Sage, it wins. The added foil inserts takes the victory over the other two unlicensed products.

Upon doing research on this product, I see they do offer the Stripe parallels for the base card set but you have to buy the Mega Box version to find them.

PARALLEL CARDS: 5-Stripe /50, 10-Stripe /30, 20-Stripe /18, 50-Stripe /10, 100-Stripe /7, 1,000-Stripe /5.

CHASE PARALLELS: 5-Stripe /10, 10-Stripe /5, 20-Stripe /4, 50-Stripe /3, 100-Stripe /2, 1,000-Stripe 1/1.

Also during my research I did see they offer the big named autographs in this product as well such as Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Trey Lance, etc. Which are hobby box offerings.
