Heartfelt Mail Day

Let's just start with some coffee before I sit down and get ready for today's latest post.

*takes a sip*

It was a few weeks back when I received an email from David from CardBoredom blog. He said after reading my post on my Top Wants list that he had something for me from that list and wanted to get it into my hands as a thank you for continuing on with Cards Over Coffee.

It wasn't too long afterwards that I received a impressively packaged heartfelt mail day from him.

This was the envelope it was sent in. This is pretty cool to be honest and looks very professional.

Just like the letter that came in it.

Inside of that was a little black package that contained the card he had sent. Since my list is over 200 items deep, I had no idea which card he could have sent and nor did he hint at which one it was.

To be honest, when I saw this card, I was thrown back. I figured being a heavy baseball blog that it was something around that not one of the very few hockey cards I want.

Also, to be the most wanted hockey card as well.

Why is a 1998-99 Sp Authentic Milan Hedjuk such a huge need? Well, it brings back some memories. This card was one of the biggest hits my father and I pulled together back in the 90's. I remember opening packs in the car at the gas station where we bought them from and finding this in one of the ones he opened. We didn't know what we had at first until I went home and looked it up in Beckett which led to a celebration.

Beckett had this card at $50+ and at some point, I believe well over $100 value which was a lot for a base rookie. It was a treasured card in our collection for a few years that got sold off after I moved out because my parents needed the money.

I never actually ever expected to own a copy again to remember those memories. And here it is, in my hands, in my collection all because someone reads my blog.

I still can't believe it.

A big heartfelt thank you David for this card and bringing back these memories. This card won't leave my hands as long as I am alive.

And if my lifespan is based on the amount of coffee I take, it will be a long time.

The hobbies foundation for me is based on memories and nostalgia. I don't care about value. I don't care about the latest fad. I care about what it means to me and where it takes me. Collect what makes you happy. We only live once.

If that means adding a Milan Hedjuk rookie, then do it.

Have a great Tuesday.

  1. Congratulations! Very generous of CardBoredom to send this card to you. That's really cool that you and your father once pulled and owned this card together. I'm sure it'll bring a smile to his face knowing that you've acquired another copy.

I actually pulled SPA Hedjuk back in the day as well. I'm not 100% sure I held onto it (sold the bulk of my collection back in 2001/2002). I'd have to dig into my hockey box to see if it escaped the purge.

  5. I agree with Matt. The memory of the card holds more value by far... I have a few of those....my dad never opened cards with me but I opened a ton with my oldest son and have great memories!

  8. He hasn't gotten much publicity for it, but David has been one of the more thoughtful bloggers since he joined this little corner of the internet.
