I Am The Terror That Flaps In The Night

*takes a sip from freshly brewed pot*

Those who know me, know my love of the Disney Afternoon cartoons.

*takes another sip, then goes back in time*

I came home from a long day of school, flipped on the TV and watched the entire two hour block.

I would watch Talespin, Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers, Goof Troop, Bonkers which were among my favorites, but none ever topped my super favorite, Darkwing Duck.

The Terror That Flaps In The Night easily became my favorite cartoon growing up. Those around me had to deal with me walking around pretending I was Darkwing whether that was at home, at a friend's house or on recess.

They all knew I was Darkwing.

I began asking for the figures for Christmas and despite my poor upbringing, I was fortunate enough to find a few figures under the tree over the years. I never did complete all of them and had to use other figures to replace the characters I was missing from other shows, but I made it work.

As I evolved more into a card collector later on and grew up, I began to just leave my toys in my toy box and eventually sold all of them around eighth grade to my aunt for my cousins. I turned that money into cards.

Sadly, as I aged, I realized how much those toys meant to me, especially the Darkwing Duck ones. But, there was nothing that I could do to get the ones I wanted back. My aunt divorced my uncle, their kids grew up and moved away and the toys I can only assume went into the trash.

*plays sad music* (thinks that you are visualizing a tiny violin)

The good thing *plays upbeat music* was that I was older and an adult and I could buy back those things I wanted. They may not have been the ones I specifically owned, but they could fill in the holes. I first started with the ones I originally had, then realized, "hey, I am an adult, why not finish what I wanted to back then?" So, I finished the set and still have it to some day display.

Over the years, I have added a few other things to my Darkwing Duck collection including some comic books, the DVD set, some VHS' and a 1992 Pro Set Promo card which was the only card in existence at that point.

Notice how I said, at that point.

Recently, I have found more Darkwing Duck cards which brought that child out even more with me.

It kicked off with Disney Lorcana set. They aren't technically real cards and are apart of a game, but, to me, they were and they were needed to be added.

So, I grabbed some of my favorite characters and art from the set including some foil parallels,

And this is what I have so far. There are more I need and one I really want is the rare that featured all of the characters. It's a little overpriced.

Most recently Topps released a set called Topps Disney Neon which has a real Darkwing Duck base card and it also includes parallels. So far, I have only added the rainbow foil parallel.

I will post this at some point.

*takes final sip of the post*

I know I am probably not the only one who used to watch Disney Afternoon on this blog, let me know your favorite show from the block

Also, have you bought any TCG cards like the ones above for your PC? Try any of the new Topps Disney Neon? Let me know in comments!

Have a great Friday!

You Have To....

You have to collect this rookie...

You have to get that graded...

You have to break open that $700 box of cards...

You have to flip that...

You have to sell, sell, sell....

You have to follow this guy's tips....

You have to set up an eBay store...

You have to run stack sales....

You have to own this prospects autograph....

You have to, You have to, You have to....

I don't have to do any of that.

I like to live dangerously.

I like to collect and collect what I like.

And what I like is probably something nobody else wants, except you know what, me. And does that matter to me, nope.

So, if I want to spend less than $5 on a rare Glow-In-The-Dark Darkwing Duck set of VHS cards, I will.

Because this was one of my favorite cartoons growing up and it means more to me than a red-hot prospect autograph.

However, even though there isn't a You Have To in this post, doesn't mean there isn't a I Have To. Because there are eight cards in this set, I have to finish this set especially since two of the final four I need are my favorite characters. It won't be easy as not many of these are listed anywhere so if anyone sees the final four, let me know.

And YOU don't have to drink coffee it's just recommended, though I have to.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Wednesday.

It's About The Firsts

When I read Night Owl Cards blog post When the firsts were mostly fun, I thought what a fun Blog Bat Around subject that the article would make.

I am not sure if that was his intention, but I have seen a couple bloggers now use it, so I said why not join in as well and have a cup of coffee while I am at it.

*takes a sip*

The point of the post was mentioning some firsts both in hobby and in life. We will avoid some "firsts" topics on this blog however ;)

Nobody wants to read about that. I promise you.

*takes another sip*

For my post on this, I copied Greg's layout but will have to tweak a few parts as my version of some of his topics didn't quite match. You will see this as you read on.

And that begins with the First Blaster.

I don't remember what my first blaster was, but I do remember my first hobby box which was a box of 1997 Pinnacle Inscriptions football back in 1997. A brand-new box of it came in and my father reserved it at the gas station for us. If you are questioning why I said gas station, it's probably because you haven't read any of my stories in the past, our gas station was like a hobby shop with tons of boxes/packs in the 90's.

This product was a lot of fun with trying to chase down the acetate Inscriptions Autographs. It was also an expensive one, so even though we reserved the full hobby box, we could only grab a couple "packs", like the one pictured, at a time.

First what I considered old card in my collection

was the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr rookie. This iconic card was my first older card and that's not even close to being the type of older cards I expect to see others post about.

I would call myself the "young" blogger, but I certainly don't feel it.

First parallel I knew was one of the first packs I opened. This one cover two topics.
1994 Topps Football Special Effects. These were very eye pleasing.

First baseball cards I purchased through mail-order .

I never ordered any cards through any mail in offer. I did order these 1992 Kellogg's PVC Darkwing Duck figures though.

First sitcom I saw was....probably..
Home Improvement. I watched soooooooo many sitcoms in the 90's it's really hard to narrow them down to which one I watched first, I do know Home Improvement was definitely up there and was the most watched one.

First "big kid" book I read
Was this. Absolute classic. It was followed up with a couple "sequels", but they weren't as good as the original.

First cartoon that freaked me out, none did I grew up watching horror movies. Instead, my first favorite voice actor that followed my entire childhood.
Everyone should know this legend, Jim Cummings.

First article I wrote as a professional writer.....
Do I consider myself a professional writer, no. But I got to write for a professional magazine and had my first article published in it. Something I will never forget.

First championship I experienced for a favorite team

I saw plenty of NY Yankee championships, none of those really hit home as much as the NY Giants beating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 42. I wasn't a football fan when the Giants won their first two Super Bowls so instead, I got to watch a lot of misery and a blowout Super Bowl loss to the Ravens. Winning this one against one my most despised teams that was undefeated at the time gave me a thrill like no other.

And I guess we can't finish this up without discussing my first cup of coffee. I don't have a date on that, I just know it was with my mother playing the game of war with playing cards sometime in the 90's.

There you have it, a lot of firsts.

Thanks to Night Owl Cards for the idea.

I could have gone on with more posts and more firsts, but I just wanted to keep it related to his theme to fit the Blog Bat Around. Maybe I will do a spinoff or sequel to this someday. For now, I will need a sequel to this cup of coffee.

Layered Part 1

*coffee ready, takes a sip before doing a big post for today*

I assumed you have noticed by now, but I have added some posts on Sport Card Collectors to help me catch up on all of the drafts I have here. By putting up some quicker posts on SCC, it allows me to put more emphasis and time on the posts that matter more which are the ones I post here.

Not that some cool cards aren't being shown off there too. So, maybe check them out.

But being able to do some "quick" posts there will help me catch up faster here. Those quick posts though will be the last ones on that blog so enjoy them while you can :)

Now I want to get to today's post which will take a couple of posts in order to accomplish posting it all.

*takes a sip*

Jon from A Penny Sleeve For Your Thoughts contacted me a couple months ago and started to ask me about certain cards and if I would be interested in them still. He has read my blog long enough, and been a friend long enough, to know that I would be.

He told me at some point those cards would hit the mailbox and they most certainly did.
I didn't know what to expect in this box other than the few cards he mentioned in our emails back and forth.

After opening the box, I discovered that there were many layers to what he sent.

First, I came upon this note and surprise within.

Then layered with another note with more surprises.

And another layer under that with an even bigger surprise.

The more I dug through the layers I uncovered and found more exciting items.

There was such a mix of sports, 90's, non-sports and non-card items.

Keep in mind I am not posting everything that he sent. That would take many, many posts but instead I decided to post a taste of everything.
I didn't even know they made Gargoyles cards. It was a popular show but wasn't in my Top 10 favorites, I did watch it though.

I almost saved this card to post on Halloween, but I didn't.

Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves trading cards.

On sick days at home from school, I always put soaps on in the background until 3pm when Disney Afternoon came on.

I am not sure what these are, but love the images. I may use some of these for a Halloween post instead.

Jon obviously has read my blog and saw that I am a huge dinosaur fan. They were my jam before sports.

Speaking of of Dinosaurs, I always made sure to watch this. "Not The Momma!!"

I recognized this face immediately, it gave me "nightmares" as a kid. Yes, that's Robert Englund. Cool addition to my Horror nostalgia pc.

Then I found these two. They are the reason I got into writing and am still writing. I grew up wanting to write horror because of these two, but instead I write about pieces of cardboard with pictures. They are still the ones who influenced me here.

Thomas Edison. Inventor. Me Coffee Card Guy, Coffee Drinker. We are the same.

I don't know what this card is, but it's one of my favorite non-sports from the box.

Then I went all Happy-Happy Joy-Joy when I found these two in the box. I was a HUUUUGE Ren and Stimpy find. I was to Ren and Stimpy like kids are to Spongebob now. Saturday nights with SNICK couldn't come fast enough.

My favorite superhero. "I'm Batman"

I never watched Under The Dome with all of the shows I was already watching at that time, but maybe I should now. This is a pretty cool die-cut.

By now you are probably wondering what the other items were in the box...well...this was the first layer. These art cards came from The Dark Knight rises. The Dark Knight saga is probably the best Batman movies ever made.

And at the bottom of the box....

Yes!!!!! My favorite Darkwing Duck episode ever!! All the villains, all the heroes. all face off! This is sooo cool!! My childhood was split between Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Darkwing Duck. This is a great add to my DW PC.

And there you have Part 1 of my mail day from Jon. I told you it's a lot and there is still a lot more to go
This is what I expect your faces to look like right now. In awe over what you have already seen and curious to see what's to come.

Part 2 will be posted soon.

While you wait, just soak in what you already saw and....

Don't forget you can start to nominate cards for the 2025 Coffee Card Hall Of Fame!! Cards don't have to be autographs, patch cards, super star cards. It can be whatever you think is Hall Worthy! Find details and current nominations HERE.
