It's Monday. Let's not let it bring you down.
I just want you to grab a cup of your favorite warm beverage in your wife's mug, or your own,
then walk over and sit down in your most comfiest chair, take a breath, relax.
Let's just talk in this NEW segment.
Today, I just want to talk about your feelings on the rumor that Fanatics/Topps might be buying out Panini America and your thoughts about the ramifications that may have on the hobby.
I believe that any one company running the show for any type of business is bad. It gives the consumer no options, higher prices, lower quality products, and less innovation since there is no competition to drive those things. Not to mention the overproduction that Fanatics has done since taking the Topps name.
I think this kind of move will be terrible for the hobby. It's bad enough they are monopolizing the main three licenses (football is soon and sorry hockey guys, hockey isn't a top three sport in the hobby) and now if they buy out the last big competition they have left, they will rule it all and the downfall of the hobby could be on it's way.
But, that's just my thoughts.
Take a sip, another deep breath, and give me your input below. I will be curious on your thoughts.
Now it's my turn to sit back, relax and take a sip to read your replies.

I think it falls under "the big get bigger and the small disappear". Things like that have been happening for years. I'm not going to let it bother me or allow Mondays to take me off course. The coffee is good and I'm looking forward to the positives of the day. Enjoy the time all!
ReplyDeleteA big card company threatens the competition, buys them out on the cheap under duress, then stiffs the players and reuses the same photos over and over. That was the story of the first 15 years or so of Topps taking down Bowman and aggressively trying to kill every new entrant. Sound familiar? The truth is we will still buy cards but they will largely be uninspiring. The good news is Fantatics so overvalues its equity in funding rounds that the people driving this monstrosity will be cursed with mediocre returns. My regret is that I don't think Fanatics' backers are bright enough to realize how disappointed they should be.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of monopolies. Competition inspires creativity and ingenuity... which is something that has been slowly declining in our hobby for three decades or so.
