Coffee With Geena Davis

I am going to be honest, I love sports, but I am no sports movie fan.

There are very few sports movies I enjoy and watch time and time again. I just feel like most sports movies are beating the same old storyline into the ground. Someone rises up from a tough life and becomes some superstar. Been there, seen that.

I like movies that are a little outside of that.

So, my favorites are on a very short list. Well, three I would consider classics I could watch time and time again.

The Sandlot-Comedy, a giant beast and backyard baseball like I used to play with my friends. Boy, I miss those days.
Little Giants-a bunch of "losers" get together and play football against some all-pros. Some laughter and the legendary actors of Rick Moranis and Ed O'Neill (need both autos still). Childish humor, but solid for this childish adult.

And then comes the sports movie with probably the most famous one-liner that everyone will know.

A League Of Their Own. A comedy/drama loaded with big names, great story and the classic line, "There's NO crying in baseball!!"

And I picked up the autograph of who I consider to be the star of the show. Well, on the field, Geena Davis who has also been in a ton of other big movies like Beetlejuice, Thelma And Louise and the Stuart Little movies just to name a few.

Davis plays Dottie Hinson who went from waiting for her husband to return from the war to the super star catcher on the field. Everyone laughed at the thought of a women's baseball league after World War II threatened to shut down the MLB season, but things changed quickly once the girls started to play led by the popularity of Dottie. It kind of reminds me of the WNBA. They had no fans, were probably about to close up shop then Caitlin Clark comes in and drives revenue up by selling out arenas.

Interesting.

Another thing I thought was cool about the movie and Geena, is that I read somewhere that she performed some of her own stunts in the movie including the famous "split catch". That's pretty cool.

There is just a lot of moments in the movie and the story is one that kept my attention. I like also the mix of humor and drama. It may actually rank as my favorite sports movie of the three. Don't tell anyone this ;)

In comments, let me know some of your favorite sports movies, your favorite Geena Davis film, and if you liked or have seen A League Of Their Own.

Hope everyone has a great night or morning depending on when you are reading this.

Statistically Crazy

I have mentioned this on here before, I am a man of numbers.

I like quantity over quality when it comes to some of my PC's, I like having more followers than not on social media, I like more than one cup of coffee, I like keep track of streaks in sports, and I really like watching views on my YouTube and on my blogs.

But last month, I am not sure what was going on in the coffee botverse especially since I didn't post much in June, but numbers blew up for me astronomically on two of my blogs. All record breakers straight across the board.

Cards Over Coffee is usually a less than 12,000-15,000 view blog per month and it blew up more than two times that! The 3,649 views was also a daily high for this blog that usually averages about 300 on a post day.

Then came the absolute craziness of Sport Card Collectors.

The first shocking number was the daily record breaker. I think before it was like 10,000 or so views in a day. Well, let me tell you, over 75,000 views on that day. INSANE!

On top of that, it walloped my highest monthly total which oddly enough was around 75,000. This time it went for over 250,000. The blog normally averages about 20,000 since I don't really blog on it anymore which makes it even more impressive.

So far, this month seems to be back down to earth, maybe even a tad slower. Hopefully it doesn't stay that way. I mean, who doesn't want to come by to see what craziness I posted with some hot brew on here? I sure hope you do! Well, you must if you are reading this tonight (or tomorrow). Thanks for that.

Hope everyone has a great night.

400,000

*gets a cup of coffee ready, sits down, begins to post*

Cards Over Coffee has been around for over five years now.

There aren't a lot of followers, the views aren't great, and comments..well...not always strong either.

But for some reason, this tiny little blog has held its own in a variety of areas. It's does okay when it comes to being voted on in blog of the year voting (though someday I would love to take home one of those wins). It has good and bad days for views. It's made it past 700 posts. But, sometimes it's not always the big wins that count. I will first celebrate the little victories this blog gets during its journey.

Today, I am happy to say this blog has surpassed 400,000 views (did so a few days ago).

Up to this point, I haven't really done any posts on milestone views such as this. Maybe it's something I will do going forward to show progression of the blog, and it gives me an extra post as well so you guys can celebrate along with me.

Sadly though, no cards in today's post. Just a celebratory cup of joe.

Thanks again for reading this blog, even if you just stop by just to read with a cup and don't leave a comment. I appreciate every one of you.

Onto 500,000.

Life Comes Before Blogging

Life is tough. Life is choices. Life is busy. Life is what you make of it. Life is beautiful.

I have posted a few times this year how busy June through August was going to be and so far, it has proven to be as busy as I have thought.

When life becomes busy it means pushing other things aside and those things become a "if you have time" kind of thing.

Blogging is one of those.

And up to this point I haven't had a minute to think about blogging...or even cards.

Let's recap some of the stuff I have been up to.

*prepared a cup of coffee for this post*

In one of my posts before I pre-drafted some, I mentioned chaperoning an 8th grade trip to Boston and I did so and had a blast.

We left about 8 o'clock in the morning of Wednesday June 4th and beat the mad rush to get a Red Sox/Angels afternoon game. It's roughly a three-to-four-hour trip from the school.

We arrived just in time for the first inning to begin which we saw some early fireworks in the first inning when the Angels put up four runs then in the bottom of the inning the Red Sox stormed back with five of their own.

The top of the 2nd had the Angels putting up three more on the board before the game went quiet for a few innings.

By the ninth inning, we were watching a nine all tie. As a Yankees fan, I knew who I was rooting on in the 9th. However, it didn't quite go the way I wanted.

As Ceddanne Rafaela curled a game winning two-run home run around the Pesky Pole in the bottom of the ninth for a 11-9 win after the Angels led four different times in the game.

I will say it was an exciting game for sure, just not the outcome I had hoped. I have been to Fenway now three times and all three times the Red Sox have won. I may be their good luck magnet.

After that, we walked to the Prudential Center to check out the view and the mall.

Despite my fear of heights, I went to the top. But will admit, I didn't look down or around as we went up in the elevator.

It was pretty cool to see the city like that and when you are up there, you don't really realize how far up you are.

Until you take the elevator back down to the mall.
After the walking, before I could even imagine hitting a mall, I needed some coffee....of course. So, I went to this fancy coffee shop, not knowing that a Dunkin (I had a free one I could have used) and a Starbucks existed in the mall, and I overpaid for a not-so-great $8 large cup of drip coffee decaf.

At least my supper at Descendant Detroit Style pizza made up for that.

It may have been $15 for this slice of pizza, but let me tell you, it was probably the best slice I have ever had. And that says a lot, I have had a lot of pizza in my lifetime.

After shopping, I didn't buy anything,
We headed back to the hotel via subway.

Then woke up the next day to breakfast which I couldn't eat. I am not sure if it was the previous day of heat or what, but I felt like I was going to hurl. I actually had to toss all of this in the trash. (insert cry emoji)

But we hit the fresh air, and I felt like myself again despite it being 96 degrees outside.

And we found ourselves at the Museum Of Science. I hadn't been since I was in 6th grade but remember how much fun it was.

Saw my first 4D movie as well.

Which involved interactions from the seating such as being poked in the back when a hummingbird appeared, being sprayed at when in the ocean and bubbles appearing and feeling like something was crawling on you when bugs showed up. I had a blast and the motion sickness didn't kick in.

For lunch, despite how I felt that morning, I took a risk with a piece of Kielbasa and covered it with mustard, peppers and onions, it was amazing.

After that, we headed to the aquarium.

It was a blast there as well, not sure why my photos didn't upload.

After there, we found ourselves at Legal Seafoods. I don't do seafood, so a grilled chicken sandwich did me in. My sister-in-law also made an appearance while there since she lives minutes from it.

The evening didn't end there as we had one more stop....
To one of the most popular pastry shops in Boston.

I can see why after eating this Whoopie Pie the next day. DA BOMB.

The following day, we headed back, and the class got to stop to Olive Garden where I haven't been in 20+ years since there isn't one close by. I think closest is a couple hours away.
I don't like soup, but this Minestrone was soooooooooooo good.

As good as my chicken alfredo.

After this trip, it was just the beginning of things to come. I got home, got prepped for an 8th grade graduation, a high school graduation, family visiting from all over including my parents and that one actually included cards and tonight I am headed to a college graduation.

On top of that, I mowed the lawn twice, need to do more weed whacking and this all-in 80+ degree sunny muggy heat. This is why fall is my favorite time of year besides Christmas.

And this is only June of my summer.
I have also been taking care of this guy. Someone must have dropped him off and he found his way here. He is really friendly and loves attention, so I am trying to find him a home but been feeding him in the meantime. I have too many cats already inside to add another. I believe my Niece is interested.

And while family was visiting, we surprised my sister-in-law with a night out for her 40th birthday.

Had some great eats there as well. This was pulled pork mac and cheese.

The restaurant was on a lake, and I spotted this once it started to get dark and we were leaving.
A lit up cross on the opposite side. I think it was a sign from God letting me know everything is going to be okay during this busy time.

I am hoping to do more posts soon. I have some fun things to share, not too many as my mail days have been dwindled to about nothing, where are you Oren with my weekly trades??!

Hope everyone has been good and been keeping those coffee refills going. I will be back with new posts soon.

Life comes before blogging.

5 Things I Did In The Hobby Last Week

It's June already and it begins a very busy stretch for me. So, posts won't be too often from here until the end of summer.

*insert sad face*

This week alone I have a car appointment tomorrow, hoping it won't cost a ton, a doctor appointment on Tuesday and then I am off to Boston on another 8th grade trip I will be chaperoning. I am not sure if it will be as much fun as the trip to DC I took a couple of years ago, but I do know we will be watching the Red Sox and Angels on Wednesday afternoon. As a Yankees fan, Go Mike Trout!!

And it only gets busier from here on out.....but I will have my trusty coffee by my side.

*it's too late for coffee tonight, but the countdown til morning is on*

I have only done two posts in this segment so far because I have been too busy to do this on a weekly basis, the last one was in April, but I wanted to let you know what this series is about if you don't remember or if you are a new reader.

This series is once again related to Elon Musk's email to government officials asking them about what five things they did.

Also, once again, this is not about politics. I just liked the idea.

*yawns, tries to get this post underway before falling asleep*

1.
I did a lot more social media posts across my planet of them. I started doing Rodney Hampton, Eli Manning updates along with small mail day posts on there since it's much faster to send out a social media message than putting up a big blog post.

If you want to catch up on stuff you missed out on, here is a list of all of my social media channels:
Cards Over Coffee YouTube Channel is for cards:

Cards Over Coffee - YouTube

Matt's World Of Fun YouTube Channel is for everything else:
Matt's World Of Fun! - YouTube

On top of this, I have two Facebook accounts, Cards Over Coffee and Sport Card Collectors,

Twitter/X: Coffee Card Guy

Instagram account: Coffee Card Guy

Bluesky as Cards Over Coffee

There you have that. Now go check me out on those!!

2.
I have put together some blog posts to publish on here this week and next, I didn't want to leave you guys hanging forever because I don't just want to put up quick posts anymore. I built this blog on a solid foundation and want to keep it there. I also made that promise after the 5th anniversary that I would never go back.

3.
I looked in my wallet and found my wallet card. He may be going to Boston with me this week, maybe even be included in some pictures. We will see.

4.
I finally sorted out my Grady M mail day into sections, now it's time to break it down from there and get it put away. There may also be a post on some of the fun finds later this week.

5.
PWE's! I spent Saturday night during the Knicks blowout packing them up. I have some being sent out for trades, RAK's (something I promised Jon from Penny Sleeves blog I would do) and future trades. Trying to stay ahead knowing what's coming up the next few months.

And there you have it. Five things I did in the hobby last week.

I don't think I will even get to five things this week or even next week with graduations and graduation parties going on and family visiting.

Hope everyone has a great, not as busy as I will be, week! Remember to take a sip for me!

Five

Can you believe it's been five years since I created Cards Over Coffee?

*takes a sip*

Believe or not, it's here. Five years of Cards Over Coffee.

Five years of cards, coffee, and hopefully fun for all of you.

I know for me it's been a ride. I never expected this blog to ever make it this far, mostly because most of my side blogs didn't, but this one has weathered the storm.

The growth of this blog continues to be slow and maybe that reflects the slowdown of all blogs in general or the fact the last few years my posts haven't been as creative as they were the first couple of years. I am hopeful I can regain that energy/creativity again after today's post and bring the readers back or new ones in. To do this, I may be taking a break from blogging on here.

Thanks to all of you who have followed, read this blog over the last five years. I appreciate every one of your comments and I also make sure to reply to every one of them.

My goals for the blog in the next year would be to hit 100 followers on the blog along with having this blog on more blogrolls and hitting that 500,000 view milestone.

Thanks again for the support over the five years.

Leprechaun

A Leprechaun is small and green,
He hid my coffee where it can't be seen,
But, if I can somehow catch him before the end of today,
my coffee will double in size they say!

700th Cup

Coffee is ready, confidence is there, and a celebratory post is in order.

Today marks Cards Over Coffee's 700th post. That's 700 times I have come on here to post about cards, some pictures or some coffee and maybe the occasional snack to go with coffee.

I like to offer a little of everything on here.

I didn't know what cards to post in a celebration post so instead, I went with my latest Rodney Hampton update. I found out that Rodney has some cards in the recent 2024 Topps Chrome football product, so I had to make a list of needs.

And boy, were there some.
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base SuperFractor 1
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Black Geometric Refractor 2
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Red Wave Refractor 5
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Red Refractor 5
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Red Geometric Refractor 5
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base FrozenFractor 5
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base White Geometric Refractor 15
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Orange Refractor 25
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Orange Wave Refractor 25
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Camo Wave Refractor 25
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Orange Geometric Refractor 25
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Gold Refractor 50
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Gold Geometric Refractor 50
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Gold Wave Refractor 50
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Yellow Refractor 75
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Green Refractor 99
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Green Geometric Refractor 99
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Green Sonar Refractor 99
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Blue Refractor 150
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Blue Sonar 150
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Aqua Refractor 199
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Aqua Sonar 199
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Teal Refractor 250
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Purple Speckle Refractor 275
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Purple Refractor 275
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Magenta Refractor 399
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Magenta Speckle Refractor 399
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base X-Fractor
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Prism
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Sepia
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Pink
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Refractor
  • Rodney Hampton 144 Base Negative Refractor
34 to be exact. I so far have 2 of them which makes the count 32 needed.

This WILL NOT be an easy chase with four /5 cards to chase and a superfractor.

I am always glad there is a new Hampton chase, but this is a little too much.

If any of you bust any 2024 Topps Chrome, make sure to check in with me if you pull any Rodney Hampton.

*takes a sip before finishing up today's post*

Before I close, I just wanted to thank everyone who has stopped by, read once in a while or read every post on here. Every one of you keeps this blog going. Though I will say the past ten or so posts have really struggled in terms of views and comments.

I hope that turns around soon. In the meantime, Happy 700th to Cards Over Coffee.

Have a great Sunday. God Bless!

Is This The Post Of The Year?

Is this the post of the year?

Probably not. But who knows.

That will be left in the hands of you, the voters, when you vote in the Nachos Grande blog End Of The Year awards.

I already voted, and no, I didn't vote for this blog once. Because I would rather leave that in the hands of you guys. I don't need my vote to try and win Blog Of The Year. If it happens, it's because of you. You are the ones who read this.

Though it would take a monumental upset to take down the 3x champ Night Owl Cards. But he is the legend in these parts.

But anything can happen, and it can only happen if you take the few seconds to vote. There are also no long lines, no missing ballots, no questionable people running and you can vote for cards and for blogs. Or one or the other. It's up to you!

Not to mention, you can do it from the comfort of your home with a cup of coffee like I did.

*sips away*

So, take a second and vote for your favorites HERE and don't forget to check back in and read Nachos Grande blog to see the results of your voting.

Have a great rest of your Saturday.

Blog Bat Around: Letters To The Hobby

This blog bat around is simple, just write a letter (blog post) to the hobby, to a player, to a card company, or something in general.

Here is mine,

Dear Card Companies,
I know I am not alone in saying this, but can you please bring back the days when you would show us where our memorabilia would come from!

I miss the days of being able to see a picture of where my piece of sports history came from. For example this latest card to my PC. It's cool to not only know that this swatch came from Veterans Stadium, but to also see a picture of the stadium it came from. I think one step more of showing a swatch of the field would have been nice as well.

But please just show us the jersey, bat, base, or whatever our relics are coming from. A picture speaks a million words.

To take this another step forward, I would also like to see a picture of the player signing cards/stickers. For authenticity sakes and that way, we know autopen or relatives didn't play a role, let's see them do the work. That isn't asking for much more. Especially since most backs are so bland now with just a guarantee write up and supposedly a company rep is there with the signers most of the time. Just snap a pic!!!! Same with celebrity autograph cards.

So, if any companies or reps from a company is reading this today, please make this move. I promise you collectors would be so happy and maybe buy more of your products. They just want to see what they are getting.

Sincerely your friend and helper,
Matt G
Cards Over Coffee

Now let me see what your letter is or who you will write to. Post a link below of your blog post so I can check it out when you make your post.

In the meantime....
