A Bit Closer

Hello fellow coffee drinkers and card enthusiasts!

*has coffee ready this time, takes a sip*

I am back and have a new post ready for #CardsOverCoffee.

Today, I am finally showing off a mail day I have had for a while now from a fellow blogging friend.

Jon, from A Penny Sleeve For Your Thoughts blog, read my post on my Laffs pack break (Throwpack Thursday) and scanned the article noticing how I was trying to finish the set. He commented asking if I had numbers for set needs and I replied with them.

Which were,
1,4,30,31,32,33 and 53.

Not much longer after that, I received an email from Jon telling me he had the following help for it,
1,4,32,33,53

Awesome! Every card counts when you are chasing any set and Jon was helping clean up a lot of needs.

Shortly after a few email exchanges to catch up, I received my mail day from Jon which not only had the cards he mentioned were coming, but also a few surprises as well.

First, the set help,

and then the surprises.

Jon knows my passion for 90's cards, so he sent along a small one. Literally, a small one.

Anyone who reads this or any of my blogs knows how passionate I am for not only coffee, but Giants football. It's hard to find Giants cards I don't have, but Jon nailed it with three spectacular new ones.
Press Proof die cut /75. Vereen didn't stay too long with the Giants but did have a few nice plays.

Rashad Jennings Rookies and Stars Longevity /25. Jennings played a few seasons for the Giants after playing for the Jags and Raiders. He set a lot of career highs while in blue and the Giants were actually the last NFL team he played for.

I like to think that Kevin Boss was actually responsible for the biggest play in Super Bowl 42 as a rookie when he took a late pass 45 yards setting up the Giants for a game leading touchdown. Overall, he played four seasons for the Gmen and made some great catches along the way. He then went on to play a season in Oakland and KC which were forgettable seasons.

Thanks again to Jon for not only the set needs, but the superb bonuses.

*takes a final sip before closing up today's post*

With just cards 30 and 31 remaining to my Laffs set, I am feeling good about being able to finally finish this one up.

I have said this before, but it really does pay to post set needs. I plan on doing more down the road.

I hope everyone has a great day and drinks plenty of coffee. Or that other stuff you drink.

Throwpack Thursday:1991 Laffs

Who is ready for a new post on Cards Over Coffee? I am! So let's do some cards and coffee!

*takes a sip*

It’s a Friday night in 1991, you have a bowl of popcorn, maybe some Bugles, a Pepsi, Ghostbusters PJ’s on and your favorite comfy spot on the couch getting ready for a TV Block you have waited all week to watch.

That 2-hour TV sitcom block was TGIF and ran on the ABC Network from 1989 to 2000 on the first original run. Which to me was the best run with some amazing shows.

Even though TGIF became a hit early the network still looked for help in promoting. So to help promote TGIF television block in 1990-91 season, Impel marketing, in partnership with ABC, created a trading card set featuring three of the shows from the block in Perfect Strangers, Family Matters, and Full House.

The trading card set was 80 cards featuring character cards and scenes from the shows.

And I happen to have an unopened pack to show off what you may find in one.

*takes a sip, begins to rip*

Each pack comes with 6 cards. There were no chase cards other than hoping to pull a character card. To me, those are the rookie card chases. Who didn’t want a Danny Tanner or Steve Urkel rookie???

Before showing off what I found, I wanted to show off the back of the wrapper because I wanted to point out it wasn’t as easy in those days to find a checklist. You either had to pull one in your pack or send in for one. It wasn’t just a Google search away.

The first card from the pack features Rachel from Family Matters with the caption “Rachel’s Place”.

The card back explains the scene and caption. All of the cards that are not character cards work this way.

The second card was an episode I remember well of full house. This is when Stephanie was playing around in Joey’s car and mistakenly shifts the car into reverse thinking that the R stood for radio.

Card #3. The first Perfect Strangers card from the pack. Now we have one from each show.

Card #4. Family Matters started out well with ratings then exploded when they introduced Steve Urkel who became a 90’s fan favorite even today.

Card #5. This is how I wake up when I hear the coffee maker turn on.

The final card. Great way to end. This episode of Perfect Strangers was a fun one as they re-enacted an episode of The Honeymooners.

*takes a sip before finishing up today's post*

I was a tad disappointed to not have pulled any character cards to show off, but I was actually able to add a couple of new ones from this pack for my set chase to replace cards that got damaged.

Hope everyone has a great Thursday!

Family Matters

*sits down, takes a sip, turns on Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee*

15 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS

Family.

It's what Christmas is all about.

Most of my fondest memories around Christmas are the moments I have spent with family.

When I was younger, it was spending time with my grandmother who would play all of the classic Christmas songs on the radio and would dance to them. Part of the reason I chose the Brenda Lee song to play while I type this. I can still remember her dancing and singing along, makes my heart warm.

Or the one time my parents got me something other than underwear and a notebook and surprised me with a couple Darkwing Duck figures.

Or when I was a bit older after I got married, and my wife and I would play guess what I got you under the tree.

Or a little later in our marriage, where we would go to the local Christmas Eve service at Church, then have my nephew, sister-in-law, the parent in-laws over to do stocking gifts and watch Christmas Vacation while eating cookies and drinking cocoa.

Or a few years after that, the family expanding and having to do four Christmases -similar to the movie-where we would have to host one and go to three others. One of those four was my favorite because we would all order takeout, play Balderdash and laugh all night long. It was a great time. Not that I didn't like Christmas number two with the amazing breakfast food.

To now where things have drastically changed. Family comes in sections since most have moved away. We no longer do Christmas on Christmas, no more Christmas Eve services or stocking gifts, no adult gifts, no breakfasts, and no game night. I know most of that sounds like things have gone downhill, but they really haven't. We all still have fun when we are all together.

Every little moment matters, and I try to treasure them all I can. The older I get, the more I realize all of this.

For me, around Christmas time, Family Matters and I hope it does for you as well.

In comments, I want to hear some of the things you do with family this time of year or your fondest memories.

Unfinished Cup:1991 Impel Laffs

Okay...so today's edition of Unfinished Cup was once a Finished Cup.

That's until this afternoon.

When trying to transfer my set on a sorting tray from room to room, the tray broke apart and my set of 1991 Laffs hit the floor like a rock. Except it was more like slow motion as my face watched them, like a cup of coffee spilling slowly like on the Bounty commercials, drop to the floor by their corners as I shouted nooooooooooooooooooooo.

My wife could hear me from the other room, she knew it wasn't good.

I dropped to my knees immediately trying to recover the set hoping that none or not too many got damaged on their trip down to the ground.

The good news is that most were safe, bad news was that some were not.

So, now I come on here seeking help to fill in the gaps of the damaged ones.

Which includes card number 1, Bob Saget. You can see from my picture the top left corner saw the floor hard on this card. Some others are worse.

And those cards are,
1,4,30,31,32,33 and 53.

Which isn't too bad knowing all 80 from the set fell to the ground, but still, they shouldn't have.

The damaged cards are fillers in the set for now until I get them replaced. My hobby OCD cannot allow a card set to be completed with damaged cards.

If any of you have my needs, please let me know! Comment below or email me at sportcardcollectors@hotmail.com.

Thank you!

Side note, if you don't know about the 1991 Impel Laffs set, the 80-card base set is built up of three TV shows from TGIF in the 90's. It starts out with Full House, moves to Family Matters and finishes up with Perfect Strangers. All three excellent shows.

Hope you have had a better Sunday than I have had, with the Giants losing again and this card tray fiasco, it's been a tough one. Not to mention waking up to a cup of coffee full of grounds.

Here's to a better Monday!
