The Ghost Of Christmas Card

*sits down with a big stack of cards nearby, takes sip, gets ready for a new post on Cards Over Coffee*

I felt like the good version of Scrooge this Christmas season as my mail box was visited by three blogger mail days.

I had the Ghost of Christmas Box, the Ghost of Christmas Card and the Ghost of Christmas Package.

For today's post, you will be visited by the Ghost Of Christmas Card which was sent by Fuji from The Chronicles Of Fuji

*takes a sip*

Fuji emailed for my address a little while ago and said he had some Giants cards to send my way.

I had no idea what to expect as he goes all over these flea markets finding the coolest stuff.

One of those cool finds ended up in my mail box.

First up, a couple of Rodney's.

I do have both, but I collect extras as well. I mean I am the super collector...I have to.

And now onto an item I definitely don't have and one that I haven't seen.
1969 Topps New York Giants Mini-Card Album.

This is the cover.

Now on the inside,

And back cover.

Pretty cool huh?

Thanks Fuji for the unique Christmas gift!

This kind of post should be a three-part series, but when we get to The Ghost Of Christmas Box, I may need to break that one down more.

Hope everyone has a great Wednesday. Hopefully it's not wacky one.

The Shoebox Delivers Part 5

My first post of March begins on Day 3 of the month.

It has been a busy week overall and one that was a bit rough for me as well. When hasn't 2024 been rough for me? I ended up with a nasty head cold Wednesday night which carried over to Thursday where it completely knocked me out and I was in bed by 8:30. Friday, I spent 80% of the day in bed with Kidney stent pain followed by another round of kidney stent pain on Saturday.

I am hoping for a better day today.

Guess it all starts with my coffee.

*takes a sip*

Today, I am finally finishing up posting about the shoebox trade with my father. I was going to drag this out a little longer, but I have nothing else to post about as I had no card mail days incoming recently.  I could post the bills I got as there was plenty of those, but I wouldn't want you to be as depressed as I am about it.

So, before I continue with today's finale, if you missed the previous parts of this series, you can check them out here:
Part 2, which you can see HERE.
And Part 3 which is HERE.
And Part 4 you can read HERE.

Now onto the cards.

This is a set I was considering chasing, now with the toughest player on the checklist acquired in Jerry Rice, I may have to make this a reality. Really cool design.

A ton of 1994 Action Packed Warp Speed. There was 7 of the 12 cards in the set found in the box. And before you ask, yes I already had this Rodney Hampton.

Next, I found these Golden Domers subset cards of Rick Mirer. However, what I can't figure out is that one has a shine to it. I don't see a parallel noted for it. If any of you have info, please comment with it. I think it's a pretty cool looking one.

Up next, autograph cards! This was completely unexpected. This is why I questioned if my father even looked through this box before trading it to me.

Not a lot of big names to start out with.

Not too often you find a Basketball Hall Of Famer autograph tucked into the bottom of a shoebox. He was also a former Knick so that's cool as well.

And then Jake the Snake Plummer autograph who also happens to be a side PC player for me. I will never forget when he led the Cardinals to the playoff upset of the Cowboys which I loved every minute of.

I would say in the end I made out pretty well in this trade. It was like the cardboard Gods were blessing me for once.

If you are reading this dad, thanks again for the trade.

There were a couple things I didn't mention in my opener. One, I went to see a surgeon on Wednesday before I fell sick with the head cold to discuss options with the hernia, they discovered on my catscan when they gave me one for the kidney stone. Apparently, the surgeon looked at a past catscan from a previous kidney stone in 2020 and saw the hernia then but it has grown bigger over time. Most likely another needed surgery this year that will knock me out for four weeks. UGH. But it will be completely up to me though if I want it done. Knowing that it has been growing, it probably should be taken care of sooner rather than later.

Second thing, I called my urologist on Friday since I was dying in pain, and she wasn't available. The nurse took notes and info from me. I should hear back on Monday if there is anything they can do for me sooner. Prayers on that. I need this stent out as I don't want to wait another three weeks.

I hope this week goes better, hope all of you have a great week as well.

Ticked Off

*takes a sip, feeling a little salty today after reading Twitter, so figured it was time to sit down and do a Cards Over Coffee post to vent some*

Ticked Off.

Spring has finally kicked into gear here which means warmer weather, but also means the return of ticks. For some reason or another the uptick, I did this unintentionally but works well I would say, in ticks in my area is insane. When I was a kid, you could roll around in the grass and play hide and seek in the woods and could just simply take a walk outside without any issues.

Now I step on my lawn and have to check myself like the TSA when I come in.

So far this year, I have taken 6 ticks off from me just doing a few yard chores. To me, that's crazy and is many more than the past few years.

This is even after I sprayed myself down and my lawn with specific tick spray I found at the local hardware store.

Ticks just tick me off!!!

*takes a sip, checks self just sitting at the table with the laptop. Hey, you never know*

Another thing that ticks me off, Flippers.

I know I have touched on this more than once on here-I somewhat promise to stop doing so-but when I see something ridiculous, it brings me back here to discuss it again.

On Twitter, I saw a few guys selling this $20 blaster for $100-$150. That's just not right. I know not everyone agrees with me as some support the hustle, but I don't. I know many others that don't either. It's just so, so wrong.

When did a hobby intended and based on fun turn into seeking stacks of cash? This isn't Poker and these are not Poker cards.

This is a hobby built on entertainment and an escape from the real word I would say for many long time "true collectors" this is not what we are feeling anymore. I see comments like this daily and it's heartbreaking for someone who has such a passion for the collecting aspect of the hobby like I do.

*takes three sips and does another leg check*

I can't say I don't agree with those that feel this way. Some have even spoken about leaving the hobby and I don't think I would be honest if I didn't admit that sometimes selling it all off doesn't sound like a good idea some days. Especially while values are the way they are.

But, then comes the simple reminders of the hobby that come at the right times to keep me going. You know, a trade, a random retail pack, or even just flipping through a stack of cards on your desk where you find a card or two that reminds you why you hang on.
First was this 1993 Action Packed Who's on First card. Being one of the possibly greatest comedic skits ever, I find this card to be very unique to my non sports collection. (I will also say I went to YouTube to watch it again and if you haven't ever heard or seen it yourself, you should do the same)

The second card was simply this President Clinton card throwing out what appears to be a first pitch. Fun card for my presidential PC. Regardless of being a Clinton supporter or not, I think his legacy won't ever soon-be-forgotten by any of us who grew up in the 90's.

All it took was these two common cards just to set me in my happy place again with the hobby.

*takes a sip of coffee, no, I didn't have relations with that mug*

If you are reading this today and are having some struggles with the hobby, I suggest you go look through a random stack of cards that you have lying around in your house. There may be something in there that reminds you simply why you collect or started to collect and focus on that. I know there is a lot of frustrating things going on in the hobby right now, but if we can focus on some positives, it will help us ride the wave out until the hobby we love becomes just that again.

Mom

*sits down with cup of coffee in hand. There is nothing better than some afternoon sunshine and some coffee. It's time for Cards Over Coffee*

It's Mother's Day. A day for all of the mom's out there to be celebrated for bringing us into this world and putting up with us. That's the best way to put it.

My mother never really had to do much "putting up" with me. I was always the good kid. I got my homework done with solid grades, I respected my parents, elders and teachers. I always did my chores when asked. But, that didn't mean I didn't have my downfalls occasionally. I said I was a good kid, not a perfect one. So when those moments came, my mother was the disciplinary one in the household and to put it easy, when you were disciplined as a 80's and 90's child, you didn't get a timeout chair to think about what you did as you knew what you did. By remembering what you did, you also remember the dire consequences so you wouldn't do it again. It also gave you more respect/discipline for those of higher authority something I think we lack in today's society.

But, it's not just the disciplinary moments I remember about growing up with my mother. I remember getting up early on school mornings and sitting with her at the kitchen table having coffee, no surprise there, and playing the card game of war before I had to get ready for school. Then when I came home from school, she waited to watch a couple of cartoons with me before she would make supper and I would go outside and play. I also remember when I asked my father for money for the school book fairs and being turned down, she would slip me a $5 just so I could get the latest Goosebumps.

What I remember most though, was the hobby she despised but came around to later on.

*takes a sip, wishes he was playing war while doing so*

When my father and I first go into card collecting, my mother accepted it. But, as the 90's rolled on, it started to get to her. The stacks of cards, the money being spent, the Becketts on the kitchen table, the non stop discussions between my father and I of products and players was really eating at her. It got to her so much, that she basically forbid us to collect and add anymore cards into the house. (picture a dictator ruling over your household)

What she didn't realize was that the hobby was like a Lay's potato chip, once you have one, you can't stop.

So my father and I had to become creative. Card shows and LCS visits "became" visits with my grandmother. Packs of cards to open were snuck in all forms of clothing though wearing a winter coat in the summer didn't last too long. Discussions about cards became notes back and forth, we didn't have texting then. We found a way to keep collecting though occasionally we were caught and sometimes even frisked for cards after she found some empty wrappers in my father's pocket once after washing it. Oooops.

This went on for many years until we finally found a way out. That way out came in the form of a Dallas Cowboys running back named Emmitt Smith.

*takes a sip, well two honestly. Starts typing up a text while also trying to move on with today's post*

As most know, I am a HUGE (emphasis on this word like Donald Trump would say it) New York Giants fan like my father. What I haven't mentioned was how big of a Dallas Cowboys fan my mother was which made for some interesting Sunday and Monday night games.

One day, I mistakenly left some Dallas Cowboy cards out on the kitchen table and on top of the stack was an Emmitt Smith, my mother's favorite Cowboy. I am not sure if it was fate, but whatever it was that day changed our card collecting future when my mother found them on the table.

*continues the text, takes a sip, comes back to typing*

That one Emmitt Smith card got my mother interested in collecting to a certain extent and it opened up our doors some as well as long as we gave her the occasional Emmitt for a "hobby payment" for our collecting.

We had her all set up with a binder, pages, penny sleeves and top loaders and she took care of her Emmitt's and still has a few to this day actually. But, most are long gone after many moves and moments of needing money.

So when I see an Emmitt Smith card, my memory is refreshed from that time. Especially when I see one around Mothers Day.

In my huge Christmas mailing from my buddy Wes, he included a solid stack of the Hall Of Fame running back that took me back and that I had to share with you guys today.

Many of these bring me back, though I don't think she owned any of these.

Maybe I should send her a "Mother's Day Card".

*takes a sip before finishing up today's post and finally finished typing up my text to send my mother for Mother's Day*

I hope all of you have a memory with your mother and collecting. Just hopefully not the one where she threw out your cards. Those are more nightmares than memories.

Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms reading this today and to all of the mom's of the readers. If you have any collecting memories with your mother, would love to read it below.
