Throwpack Thursday:1991 Laffs

Who is ready for a new post on Cards Over Coffee? I am! So let's do some cards and coffee!

*takes a sip*

It’s a Friday night in 1991, you have a bowl of popcorn, maybe some Bugles, a Pepsi, Ghostbusters PJ’s on and your favorite comfy spot on the couch getting ready for a TV Block you have waited all week to watch.

That 2-hour TV sitcom block was TGIF and ran on the ABC Network from 1989 to 2000 on the first original run. Which to me was the best run with some amazing shows.

Even though TGIF became a hit early the network still looked for help in promoting. So to help promote TGIF television block in 1990-91 season, Impel marketing, in partnership with ABC, created a trading card set featuring three of the shows from the block in Perfect Strangers, Family Matters, and Full House.

The trading card set was 80 cards featuring character cards and scenes from the shows.

And I happen to have an unopened pack to show off what you may find in one.

*takes a sip, begins to rip*

Each pack comes with 6 cards. There were no chase cards other than hoping to pull a character card. To me, those are the rookie card chases. Who didn’t want a Danny Tanner or Steve Urkel rookie???

Before showing off what I found, I wanted to show off the back of the wrapper because I wanted to point out it wasn’t as easy in those days to find a checklist. You either had to pull one in your pack or send in for one. It wasn’t just a Google search away.

The first card from the pack features Rachel from Family Matters with the caption “Rachel’s Place”.

The card back explains the scene and caption. All of the cards that are not character cards work this way.

The second card was an episode I remember well of full house. This is when Stephanie was playing around in Joey’s car and mistakenly shifts the car into reverse thinking that the R stood for radio.

Card #3. The first Perfect Strangers card from the pack. Now we have one from each show.

Card #4. Family Matters started out well with ratings then exploded when they introduced Steve Urkel who became a 90’s fan favorite even today.

Card #5. This is how I wake up when I hear the coffee maker turn on.

The final card. Great way to end. This episode of Perfect Strangers was a fun one as they re-enacted an episode of The Honeymooners.

*takes a sip before finishing up today's post*

I was a tad disappointed to not have pulled any character cards to show off, but I was actually able to add a couple of new ones from this pack for my set chase to replace cards that got damaged.

Hope everyone has a great Thursday!

The Un-Doing

Coffee is ready, I am too. Let's get to a new Cards Over Coffee.

*takes a sip*

With not many cards incoming, I am having to create new project ideas to keep my mind busy especially this year when so much has gone on.

One of my latest projects is Un-Doing a project that I just did a few years ago.
Where I had put all of my NY Yankee cards into a binder by player.

At first this was a great idea and was working out well. However, when you reach a certain number of cards and with new players being added every month, it was becoming overwhelming, and I was running out of space, time and money to keep buying binders and pages.

I had begun finding myself getting a little lazy when it comes to taking care of new incoming Yankees that I had started a box of them instead of having to dig out 8 binders and search through them for every player.

So why not just stick them all into this box then? Doesn't that make more sense? Even though I had just put a lot of work into bindering them.

It does to me which is why I have begun pulling cards from binders and adding them to this box one binder at a time.

I am two binders down so far.

What has been entertaining in this project so far, the pulling cards and putting them away has not been, is finding fun cards along the way that I had forgotten about.
This Casey Stengel is how I look at my coffee mug every morning.

Shiny!

This card is really unique turned in the light.

Newer Mantle with an old school feel.

Possibly one of my favorite Bernie Williams cards I own. Die Cut, Shine, it's all there.

And this Wade Boggs is really cool.  The player in the in the background when the card is tipped makes a swinging motion. SportFlix was ahead of its time.

I am sure I will make even more fun discoveries as I tear it all down.

*takes a sip before finishing up today's post*

This project may take me awhile. As I have been putting players away, I have realized I have doubled up on some of the players so I am having to adjust as I go along and combine the cards, so they only have one section. But that's what happens when there are so many players to track.

I hope everyone has a great Wednesday and let me know if you are currently working on any challenging hobby projects.

Poptartin' In My Mail Box

I think it's been well established on here over the years, I have a guilty pleasure in liking Poptarts. Not particularly the healthiest thing to eat, but I eat it.

But I don't do it every day.

And I can quit them anytime I want.

I can, really.

Okay, maybe not.

Don't give me that look, they taste good with my coffee for breakfast.

When @ChadBec82312937 got word on my Poptart obsession, he asked me if I had ever tried the Snickerdoodle flavor. I said no because they don't normally stock the new flavors here. It's usually the basics that are always carried.

So, he told me he would grab me a box sometime and mail it my way since I really needed to give this flavor a try.

Then later on asked if there were any other flavors I had been wanting to try and my mind immediately went to Chocolatey Chip pancakes.
So, he grabbed a box of both for me to try and mailed them my way.

And also sent along a Donruss Rookie Sweaters card for me to enjoy to my PC as well.

It amazes me that not all locations across the states get the same kind of food in their stores. Especially a brand name one like Poptarts. I would understand more food that pertains or is made locally in a certain state, but not a name brand. I am sure there are plenty of other foods I would like to try across the U.S., but hopefully someday whenever the bills are paid, I can take a trip across the U.S. like I have always wanted to.

In the meantime, thanks for the mail day Chad! Appreciate you brother!

Now the tough decision I need to make today is, which new Poptart flavor do I try first? I am hoping in comments today you guys can help me with that!

I Needed It (Topps)Now!

It's a dull, rainy Saturday so there isn't much to do other than drink my coffee and watch my lawn continue to grow and needing to be mowed so might as well put up a new blog post then, right?

Yup.

*takes a sip*

There has been a lot going on this year so far, both good and bad, but one of the things that stood out so far for me was being able to view the Total Solar Eclipse with my family. It will forever be a treasured moment for as long as I can remember it.

When the day comes where I don't remember it, I had to make sure to have a way to spark that memory again.

Which led to me adding this Topps Now card.

Which will help spark that memory and the buildup, excitement and smiles that it brought.

I know for the most part a lot of people think Topps pumping out Topps Now cards like this one are lame, I read the comments when they announced this one, but I like them and think they are capturing big-fun moments whether that be on the field or in the world.

I say, keep 'em coming. The odder, the better.

*takes a sip before finishing up today's post*

I hope your Saturday is dryer than mine and hopefully you will be able to mow your lawn.

In comments, would like to see your thoughts on the Topps Now cards that don't focus particularly on baseball or baseball player itself. Like recently when they celebrated the Mets Hot Dog sales or the Racoon showing up at a soccer game.

Houston, I Am Ready To Launch

*too late for coffee...the only time I don't drink it*

Since I am up late watching the Knicks, playing poorly tonight, and have Knicks cards to post about, only makes sense to do so.

I may be into watching basketball again right now, but it definitely won't be as deep into my blood as it was in the 90's. There was nothing like basketball in the 90's and Knicks in the 90's.

I absolutely loved basketball.

As a kid, not only did I watch every Knicks game on TV, I would also create my own league playing by myself outside and acting out as some of my favorite Knicks players against rest of the league's teams and players. I kept track of stats, scores, etc on paper which some I still have to do this day. I was also honest about the league, the Knicks didn't win every championship or game, though they came close most seasons.

I always had two players I loved acting out as most, John Starks and Allan Houston. These guys will always be my favorite all-time Knicks players.

Especially Houston.

I always felt he came up in the game's most important moments and always loved when you could hear Allaann Houuuuuuuston being called out on TV when he knocked down a big three pointer.

So, I started a small PC of him a few years ago. It's nothing big nor is it anywhere near the top on TCDB, but it's still fun to add to when I can.

Before I added some new ones recently, I started at 13th place on TCDB. I am well behind the leader but when your username is AHoustonCollector it's expected to be. That would be like anyone chasing me on a lot of my collections on there. I dominate a lot of spots.

So, I don't worry about numbers when it comes to my Houston collection. I just add fun cards when I can and build a collection that way.
This Luxury Box card I thought was a nice looking/designed card.

Any insert, especially a shiny one is always an add.

But, base are cool too.

But not as cool as one of my new favorite Houston's now. I have wanted this refractor for some time, now I have it.

Speaking of refractors...another nice 90's one here. I can't decide if I like the Chrome or Finest one more.

Houston relic cards are pretty much free. You can find them for next to nothing. I like to add some when I can.

I own a few autographs so far, this one was a cheap add.

And my final new add was probably my favorite one. This autograph card doesn't sparkle, doesn't shine, but it simply looks great.

Not a lot of movement with the new adds above and a few others, but I am up to 11th. Maybe someone reading this today can help me move up further.

If you have some or are curious what my needs are, you can check out my want list collection HERE.

If you indeed have some I need, just drop me an email to sportcardcollectors@hotmail.com.

*looks up at the Knicks score again, looks back down*

Looks like by the Knicks game tonight, I will be spending Sunday afternoon watching a Game 7. I just hope the Knicks can pull it off, this franchise has been through too much and I would actually like to see one of my New York teams win.

If they don't, I will have my Houston cards to focus on at least and remember the good times.

Have a great sleep.

Turning Over A New Leaf

Coffee is ready and so am I! It's time for a new Cards Over Coffee!

*takes a sip*

I have been anti-Leaf trading cards for many years, well not their Pop Century product, but all of their sports products. I only saw junk without the logos and a sad attempt to try and match the other company's efforts.

But recently, I have turned over a new Leaf, I have been adding Leaf cards to my collection and becoming quite fond of them. Maybe more than the licensed companies.

So far, my chase has been mostly focused on Eli Manning and there has been plenty to chase between 2023 and 2024.
This is a Blue Crystal parallel from 2023 Pro Set Metal. As always, team color match for the win.

These are numbered to 7.

2023 Pro Set Pink Wave

These are /4

2023 Pro Set Silver Wave

Those are numbered /7

Then another team color match with 2023 Pro Set Blue Wave

These are /8

Then there is the 2023 Pro Set Silver Crystal.

These are numbered to 5.

I also have a Pro Set Retro from 2023 that's in the same product with the other.
This is a Blue Crystal. If you haven't been able to tell yet I really like the blue ones.

These are /7.

Now onto my 2024 chase so far. I like the 2024's even better so far.
This is the base 2024 Leaf Metal. This card is not numbered.

This is an Orange mojo parallel.

These are /4

Green Pulsar

This is /5

And that's it...for now. I think I may have a couple more on the way.

In the meantime, here is a happy group photo of them,

I am not sure how many more of these I will seek out. Depends on the situation and price. There is still tons more I can go for as it feels like this product is an endless pit of parallels with multiple 1/1's. There is no such thing as a rainbow chase with either year of these products, but they do have some very creative parallels. One of the 1/1's was called something like flame or fire and had flames in the background, looked amazing but got out of reach for me.

Maybe someday it will pop back up again, and I can find a trading friend to assist in landing it.

*takes a sip before closing up today's post*

It didn't take me much to turn over a new leaf when cards look this good and with the creativity they spent with doing these parallels. I am looking forward to adding more of them to my Eli collection and hopefully other parts of my Giants PC as well.

I also need to make a list of Pop Century autograph cards I want from its recent release.

Hope everyone has a great Wednesday filled with full mugs.
