Where were you the day the King Of Pop died? Don't remember? I do.

Most celebrity deaths I don't remember where I was or what I was doing at the time I found out they had passed, but for some reason or another, Michael Jacksons had always stood out.

It wasn't like I was a diehard fan of his, there are a few songs I enjoy, but nothing I play on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis.

But I still remember the day he passed.

It was a hot June day in 2009. My wife was mowing the lawn outside and I was taking care of some inside chores while the TV was on one of the news channels for background noise. That's when the news broke of his death. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It wasn't like he was old or that anyone was expecting it. I then remember running out to my wife and telling her on the lawnmower that the "King Of Pop" had passed away and how shocked she was as well.

I think when she was done mowing, we both sat down and ended up watching the news to hear more about what had happened to him.

This had always just stuck in my mind. I don't know why still.

Slice Of American Pie: Steve Jobs 1955-2011

*takes a bite of actual apple pie, takes a sip, and sits down with today's featured card. let's get ready for another new cards over coffee*

My American Pie set is slowly getting to its end, but I still have a way to go. What's great though is when you can find a deal like I posted about in the last the posts in this segments and landing some of these for $1 when some go for much more.

Like today's card.

I don't know if it actually is or isn't, but when most list this on eBay, they call this the Steve Jobs rookie card. 

If this is true, it's sad that it had to come in the form of his passing. This man was the legend of Apple products.

This was a big addition as this card normally goes for much more than $1. Sometimes even in the double digits.

The Funk

My internet is back finally, however, life has been crazy busy, so I haven't had a lot of time to do "card stuff" including blogging. Despite having sometime today to finally sit down and blog though, it is taking me a lot to do it. I have been feeling a little bit of funk with blogging and wanting to do it.

It's just so much work.

Uploading photos, downloading photos, then once again uploading said photos to the blog. Having to sit down and actually type up a post is about an hour. In all, it takes me roughly two hours to complete one post and to have some pictures ready for another post. That's a lot of time spent on something I don't get paid for and a lot of the times, barely get views on.

But here I am anyways spending some more of my spare time typing. I don't know why, but just felt led to do so today. Maybe it will free me from my funk but I mainly think it's because I havee mail days to catch up on and thank yous that are owed.

*takes a sip before moving on with the mail day post*

Despite the funk I have been in, the lack of internet and the busyness, I have gotten some pretty cool mail days the last few weeks.

One of those came from Blog Reader Oren who passed along some really appealing cards in our last trade.

If you have read this blog, you would know how much of a Fleer Metal fanatic I am. Even though the 1995 brand isn't nearly as cool as the later brands when it switched to Metal Universe, I still dig em.

This is another card from that set, but a parallel/insert called Silver Flasher of a flashy kind of thrower in Brett Favre. I remember watching an interview with his receivers where they were saying how hard and fast he threw and how much their hands hurt.

 

Speaking of Favre, this one isn't 90's, but cool designed Favre is always welcomed. I actually have a decent sized Brett collection. It's not even on purpose so now I just call it a side, side PC.

Inserts from the 90's, YES PLEASE! This is a 1995 Playoff Prime Fantasy Team that is acetate but has cool writing in the background.

1996 Laserview is a set I am chasing, I think this Neil O'Donnell is a new one towards it.

Same for these 1995 Stadium Club PowerSurge. What a cool card when you turn the card at certain angles.

Flair always had some nice looking inserts in the 90's

The iconic ZTeams of the 90's! I completed the 1996 version, just stared the 1995. I am now only two cards in haha. My hope is to complete the 1995 and 1997.

 

And finally, it's not often you can find new Giants cards for my collection, but when you do, it's from the 90's. Despite my love of that era and my Giants, for some reason other than Rodney Hampton, my overall collection lacks a lot of the combination of the two.

I am hoping to at least put another new post up for tomorrow for another mail day I haven't gotten around to posting yet. 

I was also hopeful that today's post, as I forced myself through it, would maybe get me out of my funk a little but it hasn't. Maybe tomorrow's post I will find the inspiration to blog more again.

It Pays To Post Them

*sits down with filled cup of coffee, laptop and a stack of fun cards. Guess what time it is, no it's not hump day (referencing the Geico commercial), it's time for some Cards Over Coffee*

I am always on the lookout to try and find ways to fill my many set needs.

Sometimes I am able to make some Twitter trades and other times I pick up a card or two when I have available funds on eBay.

Today, was a first for me as I completed my first ever real TCDB trade.

*takes a sip*

TCDB member Abide has been recently commenting on my posts and on one of my Unfinished Cup posts, a segment that covers my set needs, he stated he had some set help for me and left his email for contact.

So, I took advantage and did so.

We did the trade through email, which is easier for me as I can send pictures of what I have instead of taking time I don't have to input my many boxes of trade bait, and it was completed fairly fast. He absolutely blew me away helping me with a couple of longstanding sets I have been chasing.

The first one of the two sets he assisted with, knocked off 18 of the 37 needs I had for 1998 Ex2001 baseball,

I only posted a few of them here. Such great looking acetate cards and brings back many collecting memories with my dad when we ripped packs of these together.

Abide then almost took down all 5 of my needs for the 1997 Ex2000 set when he sent 3 of my needs,

Also, take note that I used my lightbox again just to capture the magic and beauty of these. I may take pictures using that on and off depending on the cards.

On top of set help, he also discovered that I collect Allan Houston and sent along a couple of really nice freebies,

Other than 90's Spx, one of the other base card sets I have been chasing for every sport in that era is Ex.

I have so far completed the Ex2000, Ex2001 football sets, I still need Ex-Century. I have added a couple cards here and there from basketball for all three sets but with MJ, Kobe and some key rookies, I don't ever expect to finish those. 

But, one I am hoping to finish that I am soooooooooooooooo close on is today's Unfinished Cup special.

The 1997 Ex2000 baseball card set has been a working progress since 1997. I have been adding cards here and there to the set but haven't ever finished the 100-card base set. Which I will also toss in that this is my favorite set of the three Ex versions.

I took to Twitter in hopes I can finally fill this unfinished cup but there was no help there.

So, I turn to you blogger family and anyone who may read this. I am card #95 Barry Bonds base card away, do any of you have this to help me finish? (updated this on July 12th 2022)

Slice Of American Pie: Kurt Cobain

It has almost been a year since I have done a new post in this series. It's not that I haven't added a lot of cards for my set chase, I just haven't had the time to do a new post about them.

That ends today because my newest add to my set chase was a tough one and I must share it.

In the 2011 Topps American Pie set, there are certain cards that are tougher to land than others. Some feel rare and others have been driven up in price. Fortunately for myself, thanks to blog reader Oren, have a few of the tougher ones in the set but there are still more out there that will take a little bit to land. Those cards are considered to be "rookies" which is what makes them so tough to add because you don't want to feel like you are overpaying for base cards.

Today's card was one of those I didn't want to overpay for especially since I was never a fan.

Kurt Cobain, the lead singer for Nirvana, has a base card in the set considered to be his rookie. Most of his base cards are listed as BIN's at $10 and up. Sometimes auctions can even go that high if not a little higher. When I saw one listed for a .99 auction with $1 shipping, I jumped on it hoping for the best. In the end, I won it for $4.36 which I saw as a steal though one recently went for under $3.

The card showcases Cobain on the front of the card as apart of the 90's era on the set.

 

The back discusses his suicide that shocked his fans.

I never really liked any of Nirvana's songs so if it wasn't for this as a set need, I probably wouldn't have chased this card down.
